Union's Mortimer reaches 1,000th point as a junior
DUBOIS - For some high school basketball players, the moment they score their 1,000th career point is the highlight of their season.
For Andrea Mortimer, it's a mere footnote.
Union's junior forward eclipsed the milestone with a third-quarter basket in the Damsels' 74-53 PIAA Class A opening round playoff win over Duquesne Saturday afternoon at DuBois Area Middle School.
But with her team in the midst of the best season in the program's recent history, Mortimer is keeping things in perspective.
"It feels good," she said of her achievement. "But we got the win and that's the most important thing.
"It wouldn't have meant as much if it had come in a loss," she added.
Getting to 1,000 career points requires consistency and, since the second half of her freshman season, Mortimer has been the definition of consistent.
In the final 12 games of the 2002-03 campaign, Mortimer averaged 9.6 points per contest, including 15 in a PIAA playoff loss to Serra Catholic.
"She got a good bit of playing time her freshman season," Union coach Josh Meeker said. "…especially down the stretch, we got her in quite a bit."
She went from a solid player to a star in the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference as a sophomore, scoring in double figures in 23 of Union's 29 games.
She ended that season with 14 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.7 steals per game as Union compiled a 23-6 record.
The effort earned her first-team status on the KSAC and Butler County all-star teams.
Mortimer is currently averaging 16.3 points as she and her teammates prepare to face Conemaugh Valley in a second-round state playoff contest Wednesday night.
"I never really thought about (scoring 1,000 points) that much," said Mortimer. "But I'm definitely glad I was able to do it."
"Just looking back and seeing how much she has matured as a player from her freshman year until now, it's amazing," said Meeker. "She's such a great player, and, when you look at her, she really is an undersized forward (5-foot-6)."
