CHEER
Taxpayers of the South Butler School District should be appreciative of the school board's effort to keep them informed about the Act 72 tax-relief law.
The board has scheduled a special meeting for 7:30 p.m. March 2 in the primary school cafeteria to provide taxpayers with the opportunity to ask questions and hear the latest information about the law.
The measure provides for homeowner property tax reductions in districts that agree to comply with provisions of the optional law. South Butler officials haven't made a decision yet about whether to comply.
One of the requirements, if South Butler participates, is that the district would be subject to a voter referendum for tax increases over the rate of inflation.
South Butler residents should adjust their schedules to allow them to attend the March 2 session. Meanwhile, other districts in the county should schedule similar informational sessions for their residents.
Districts have until May to decide whether to participate.
People attending such meetings should be willing to offer their views on how their district should proceed. This is an issue not to be regarded lightly.
