Butler wrestlers rally in WPIAL playoffs
The Butler wrestling team Tornado erased a 21-10 deficit by winning the final six matches and pulled out a 40-21 victory over host Thomas Jefferson in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA team playoffs Monday.
Freshman Ian McLaughlin highlighted the run at 119 pounds when he pinned his opponent in 11 seconds. It marked his 20th pin of thew season, one behind the school record.
Alex Evanoff (125) had the Tornado's other pin, while Decker Hubbs (112) and Marcus Hough (275) earned forfeit wins.
"I know we won much but needed more from the team," said Butler coach Scott Stoner.
After defeating the higher-seeded Jaguars (11-4), Butler (12-3) now will travel to No. 2 seeded Connellsville today for a 6 p.m. match.
"We're going into a meat grinder now," said Stoner. "Toward the end of the season, you want the better competition."

Serra Catholic defeated Mars 6-1 and Bethel Park blanked Seneca Valley 8-0 in PIHL action Monday.
Fred Pinto set a new Butler boys indoor record in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.39 seconds at the Kent State Invitational this past weekend.John Strutt won the 800 with the third-fastest time in the state so far.Other medalists included Luke Renwick, Josh Cable, Brian Wiley, Andy Strutt, James Rogerson, Nolan Brink, Dave Crissmon, Matt Feder, Doug Moran and Bobby Ridley.The Tornado girls team had two school marks broken as Kendall Butch pole vaulted 11 feet, 6 inches and Lea Renwick ran the 55 dash in 7.18 seconds.Other medalists were Amanda Bresnehan, Tess Crispin, Kate DeGeorge, Amanda Malecky, Jess Tomsey, Hannah Rekich, Sarah Thiebaud, Marie Rumbaugh, Emily Chiappini and Valerie Gray.
