SV wrestling coach sees improvement despite loss
JACKSON TWP - Even in defeat, a coach can sometimes see his team taking a step in the right direction.
That was the case for Lee Mullett, who watched his Seneca Valley wrestling squad drop a 46-20 decision to Section 3-AAA rival North Allegheny Wednesday night.
"Coming into tonight, we were just hoping to improve on our performance (against NA) last year," Mullett said. "And I think we did that. We even had a couple of kids who couldn't wrestle tonight because they were sick and NA was able to pick up two forfeits."
The Raiders, who dropped a 58-18 home match to the Tigers last season, received a pin from Frank Mullett at 140 pounds and a technical fall win from Lee Layton at 135.
North Allegheny (13-1, 5-0) tallied four pins - Jason Turner (103), Steve Sabreen (112), Ryan Troiano (119) and R.J. Parks (275).
The match included an overtime bout and two double-overtime decisions.
At 215, Seneca Valley's Mike Bianco battled NA's Rory Dahl to a 3-all tie after three periods.
With just 13 seconds gone in the extra time, Bianco recorded a takedown to win 5-3.
The double-overtime bouts came in consecutive weight classes: SV's Pat Coyne outlasted Rob Cawley at 125 by a score of 2-1.
North Allegheny's Justin Wang then defeated Frank Snyder 3-2 in the 130-pound bout.
Frank Mullett got the Raiders (7-7, 1-4) out to a quick 6-0 lead with his opening-bout pin of the Tigers' Ryan McCullough.
"Frank's one of the guys who's really coming on strong," Lee Mullett said. "Last year, he had about seven starts. Now he's a full-time starter."
The Tigers rebounded to win the next two bouts, including Karl DeCiantis' major decision (12-4) of Zach Cahall in the 152-pound bout.
The Raiders were forced to forfeit the next two bouts, giving the Tigers a 19-6 advantage.
Mike Rossetti then prevailed in a 4-0 decision over NA's Derrick Schmidt, the most competitive match up until that point.
Rossetti led 2-0 after one period and added a takedown in the final seconds of the bout.
The Tigers' lone defeat this season came against Burrell.
"We've got a lot of inexperienced guys this season," said NA coach Jamie Kyriazis. "But the guys are working hard and taking it one match at a time.
"The kids never get ahead of themselves," added Kyriazis. "They head into every match knowing it's going to be tough."
The Raiders will return to action Friday when they travel to Avonworth.
