Pioneers overmatched in home loss to CCAC-Allegheny
BUTLER TWP - Considering its opponent entered Monday's game riding a nine-game winning streak, the Butler County Community College women's basketball team picked a bad time to play its worst game of the season.
CCAC-Allegheny's Maria Medley led all scorers with 17 points as the Cougars routed the Pioneers on their home floor 70-24.
"It wasn't for a lack of effort, it never is," said Pioneers' coach Sean Carroll. "We just didn't execute tonight."
The Cougars (10-1) controlled the glass, evidenced by the disparity in shots attempted: Allegheny tallied 78 shots to BC3's 38.
Charla Thomas led the Cougars' effort with nine rebounds while contributing 15 points. Medley chipped in with eight boards.
"(Allegheny) is just a good team," said Carroll. "They're all athletic players, one through nine. It's almost like picking your poison when playing them."
Karns City graduate Stephanie Devore led the Pioneers (3-10) with eight points, while Seneca Valley product Julie Wills and Knoch grad Melissa Lewetag each added five points.
BC3 held its own early in the first half, trailing 13-8 after seven minutes of play.
But the Cougars used the next eight minutes to mount a 17-4 run before heading into halftime with a 41-16 advantage.
Allegheny's effort included just three turnovers in the first 20 minutes of play.
"We're in our third year here," said Carroll. "And going up against these established programs, we must play better than we did tonight to have a chance."
The Cougars, who tallied five 3-pointers in the game, also received 15 points from Lashana Epperson.
