Abby Moose scored eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, to help the U.S. Deaflympics women's basketball team defeat Japan 98-41 in pool play in Melbourne, Australia.

The U.S. team advances to the medal round to play Ukraine, the Pool 1 runner-up, Wednesday. The winner will face either Sweden or Lithuania in the gold-medal game later that day.

Moose, a senior guard at Grove City College, is averaging 10.3 points, 2.3 steals and 2.0 assists per game.

For the second time this season, California (Pa.) University women's basketball player Kim Nowakowski has picked up the PSAC West Rookie of the Week award.Nowakowski, a freshman forward from Butler, won the MVP award in leading the Vulcans to the team title of the Bahamas Goombay Shootout. She scored 18 points in the 56-54 championship game victory against Freed-Hardeman. She added 11 rebounds and three steals in that contest.On Saturday, Nowakowski added four points, six rebounds, two steals and assist and a blocked shot in a 72-56 win over Bloomsburg.

Rachel McCoy, a freshman forward on the Grove City College women's basketball team, had a pair of double-doubles last week and was named Presidents' Athletic Conference's Women's Player of the Week.McCoy had 21 points and 10 rebounds in a 62-51 victory over Denison (Ohio) and 17 points and 11 boards in a 72-51 win over Juniata.

The Butler Cubs will have seven boxers taking part in the USA Boxing Tournament Friday at the Green Tree Radisson.Ryan Covert, K.P. Path, Steve Podbensky, Josh Sychak, Mike Mercurio, Chris Stitt and Chris Martini will represent the club.Doors open at 7 p.m. with the card slated to begin at 8. Three members of the Mars hockey team and two on Butler players were picked for PIHL Southwest All-Star team.Mars junior forward Michael Randolph, senior defenseman Shaun Becker and junior goalie Brian Ross will play in the Class A game against the Northeast Conference All-Star team at 12:30 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Ice Castle in Castle Shannon.Mars coach Eric Glover will be one of the three Southwest coaches.In the Class AAA game at 4:30 p.m., Tornado senior forward Spencer Crouse will take part while teammate Mike Guenther will be an alternate.The Class AA game is slated for 2:30 p.m. and the open game at 6:30.
