The Butler Eagle is planning its annual Stork Derby contest for the first baby of the new year for 2005.

The first baby born at Butler Memorial Hospital, or to a Butler Eagle subscriber in the new year will win prizes from participating businesses and will be featured in an upcoming edition.

Submissions will be accepted from parents, area hospitals or attending physicians. All submissions will be verified.

To submit information, call 724-282-8000, Ext. 252, by noon Jan. 4.

The Butler County Unity Project, American Association of University Women and the Butler YWCA will sponsor a breakfast in celebration of the birthday of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Jan. 17 at the YWCA, 120 W. Cunningham St.The featured speaker will be Elizabeth Asche Douglas, an artist, author and professor. The theme for the event is "King and Culture."Tickets are $5 and are available at the YWCA.

The Old Stone House Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America will host its Christmas banquet at 6 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Garden Gate Restaurant.Reservations for the event are due Jan. 15. All participants should take an item for a silent auction.

EAST BRADY - An encore presentation of the Christmas cantata "Thank God for Kids: A Community Christmas" will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday in the East Brady Community Center.The show, produced and directed by Amanda Hertweck, a 2002 graduate of Karns City High School and a musical theater major at Point Park University, will feature musical and dance performances by local children.Tickets for the event are $6 and are available at the door. Proceeds benefit the Butler County Chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

The Pacific Intercultural Exchange is now seeking local host families for foreign high school students arriving soon.All students are between the ages of 15 to 18, speak English and have their own spending money and insurance.For information or to schedule a meeting with an exchange representative, call 800-631-1818.

Butler Rehabilitation Centers, 200 Renaissance Drive, will offer a free smoking cessation course from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays from Jan. 17 through Feb. 21.Respiratory therapists will lead the course, which has a 90 percent success rate, and follow up with participants following course completion to monitor progress.For information or to register, call the rehabilitation center at 724-282-0755.Notices, in writing, of festivals, fund-raising events, newly elected officers and other news from clubs and non-profit groups should be sent to the Focus department one week in advance of the event.
