SV girls withstand late rally by Hampton

JACKSON TWP - Hampton's offensive slump lasted just a bit too long.

The Talbots managed only one field goal in the second and third quarters combined before a fourth-quarter rally fell short as the Seneca Valley girls basketball team grabbed a 46-41 non-section win Monday evening.

"Until we learn to take care of the basketball better, things like this are going to happen," said Seneca Valley coach Todd Schoeffel of his team's six turnovers in the final period.

The Raiders (2-1) led 38-27 with four minutes remaining.

Hampton senior forward Maria Milfeit then drained a 3-pointer to pull the Talbots to within 38-30.

Her team's comeback attempt hit its peak with Seneca leading 40-36 with 90 seconds left to play.

SV sophomore guard Kelsey Spencer hit three of four free throws down the stretch to help preserve the win.

Spencer, whose left wrist was taped because of a severe bruise, led the Raiders with 13 points.

"She also had two big blocks to thwart two of (Hampton's) scoring chances late," said Schoeffel. "She is coming off a broken ankle last year. There's still progress to be made, but she played well tonight."

Milfeit led all scorers with 27 points, including 13 of the Talbots' 18 points in the final quarter.

"We like our offense to be balanced," said Hampton coach Gary Wilson. "But Maria is definitely going to get her scoring chances."

Hampton's offensive woes began in the second quarter, but they were not as apparent due to 10 points the Talbots managed from the free throw line in the period.

Milfeit scored a two-point basket in the opening minutes of the second half that gave Hampton a slim 23-22 lead.

It was the last advantage the Talbots (1-2) would enjoy, as the team didn't score another point until well into the final period.

By the end of the third quarter, Seneca Valley held a 32-23 cushion.

"We were able to extend our lead a bit," said Schoeffel. "And it's a good thing because we ended up needing it."

"We have three kids out of the lineup," said Wilson. "That's not an excuse, but those three girls are a big part of what we like to do."

"We extended our defense a bit and used a half-court trap," Schoeffel said of his defensive strategy. "It worked for us. (Hampton) missed some shots and we got the rebounds."

Point guard Val Johnson added nine points for the Raiders while Tina Mangola scored eight in the win.
