30-win wrestlers back for more this winter
Win 20 matches in a single high school wrestling season and you've done well.
Win 30 and you're among the best. Win 30 before your senior year and the sky's the limit.
For Jeff Becker and Trevor Gallo of Slippery Rock, Adam Smetana of Mars and Robbie Miller of Grove City, the sky is the limit in 2004-05.
Becker was 30-2 and placed third in the PIAA meet for the Rockets last year. He returns at 145 pounds and is 101-12 in his career. Gallo was 30-4 and placed sixth at the PIAA meet a year ago, is 78-22 in his career and returns at 189 pounds.
"With Jeff and Trevor, we return two kids who placed at state and have been there a couple of times," Slippery Rock coach Fred Powell said. "That's great for our program."
Smetana is a senior 119-pounder for Mars who took a 32-1 record into the state meet at 103 pounds last year. His first loss was in the regional finals.
"Adam is outstanding. He is the stud wrestler on the team," first-year coach Don Cooley said.
Cooley was an assistant coach at Howland (Ohio) High School for the past eight years and was an assistant under Neil Turner (former Lock Haven University coach) at Messiah College earlier in his career.
Miller won 30 matches as a freshman at Grove City and is at 112 pounds this year. He is one of five returning Eagle wrestlers with at least 25 wins last year, joining senior captains Alec Miller at 135, Derek DeGrass at 140, Dan Wise at 152 and Kent Uber at heavyweight.
Butler coach Scott Stoner is without his best wrestler as senior heavyweight Adam Pritts, who set single-season and career school records in pins last year with 21 and 49, respectively, did not come out for the squad.
"He decided not to wrestle this year," Stoner said. "But we've got close to a full lineup and some very promising freshmen this year."
Leo Mullett assumes the coaching reins at Seneca Valley after spending the last eight years coaching the Raiders' elementary and junior high teams.
The Raiders have a pair of 20-win wrestlers back in Pat Coyne at 125 and Frank Snyder at 130.
"I've worked with most of these kids all the way through the program," Mullett said. "I know them well and I know we have talent."
