Portersville wins volleyball state title
The Portersville Christian School varsity girls volleyball team recently completed an undefeated season and won the program's first Ohio Valley region state championship at Cedarville University.
The Warriors defeated Granville Christian School, 3-0, in the championship match.
Coach Donetta Dupont brought her team to the championship round the previous two years before winning this year's title.
The squad produced four all-conference performers. Senior middle blocker Laura Morley of Grove City is a two-time league MVP who broke her own school record with 320 kills this season. She also had 65 aces, 59 digs and 50 blocks.
Senior Amber Thompson of Butler had 28 aces, 41 digs and 84 kills. Sophomore setter Hannah Gardner of New Castle set the school's varsity assist record with 569. She also had 82 aces, 39 digs and 18 kills.
Senior middle blocker Ashley Yoho broke the school record with 100 aces.
Sophomore Valerie Hamilton of Harmony contributed 39 aces, 31 digs and 56 kills.
Other team members are senior Rebecca Calhoun, juniors Brittany Elliott, Rebecca Fragale and Rebecca Koehler, sophomores Jordan Hogan and Aimee Roe.
Zach Pennington scored four goals and added two assists Thursday as the Butler freshman ice hockey team defeated Pine-Richland, 10-5, at the Belmont Arena.Chris Glover added three goals and Matt Stirling two. Tanner Master had five assists.Beau Bechtel had a goal and an assist. Also earning assists were Mavrik Geophert, Ben Beers, Warren Schultz, Dave Wolfe, Josh Elsass and Eric Klopher.
Kevin Geibel scored three goals, but Butler's varsity dropped a 5-4 decision to Peters Township recently at the Born2Run Sports Complex in Grove City.The Golden Tornado are 2-4 on the year.Butler (junior varsity) 8, Bethel Park 6 -Tony Manfred and Mike Smith scored three goals each for the Tornado (3-2-1). Jimmy Franek was the winning goaltender.
