Cheer:

It makes sense for the Butler Redevelopment Authority to revitalize its nonprofit foundation in an effort to attract additional sources of funding.

As explained by Perry O'Malley, authority interim executive director, nonprofit foundations allow public entities such as the authority to tap into grants and other programs that are open only to nonprofits.

Although some people might frown upon that approach, Butler should not allow itself to be at a disadvantage in competing against others who are using that money-raising strategy.

Butler should be on a level playing field with others.

Since only one current foundation board member is still on the authority, the authority has no control over its own nonprofit arm. O'Malley is right in seeking to change that, even if it becomes necessary to form another foundation to accomplish the proposed objective.

Butler should seek funding from every appropriate source possible.
