Seneca grabs first WPIAL title in girls volleyball
WEXFORD - Sixty minutes.
That's how long it took the Seneca Valley girls volleyball team to write the final chapter of its first-ever WPIAL championship run.
"This feels awesome. I don't know what to do with myself right now," said senior Faith Guerra, who served the final two points in the Raiders' 3-0 sweep of Mt. Lebanon Saturday night at North Allegheny High School.
"We dream big, and we decided to set our goals high and do everything we could to get here," she added
The match, which ended with scores of 25-13, 25-19 and 25-10, capped a sweep of another sort for Seneca Valley.
In three Class AAA playoff matches, the Raiders were a perfect 9-0, outscoring their opponents 227-113 in the process.
"I've been with the girls for almost three years now, and right from the start, we've had our hearts set on this right here," said Seneca coach Heather Haff as she held up her WPIAL championship medal.
The Blue Devils, who marked their first district playoff appearance in three seasons by reaching the finals, made one run at the Raiders and it came in the second game.
Trailing 16-8, Mt. Lebanon's Sara Waller and Ashley Ropar both tallied four service points in consecutive possessions to pull to within 19-17.
Seneca Valley senior Laura DuBois and junior Chelsey Pavlick stopped the two runs with much-needed kills.
The Raiders regrouped and battled to pull out the 6-point victory.
"I really felt that if we could've taken a game from them, they would've been rattled," said Blue Devils coach Dawn Begor. "(Seneca Valley) really hasn't been in that position all year.
"If we had won that second game, it might have been a whole new ballgame," she added.
Despite the lack of pressure situations this season for the Raiders (13-1), they were up to the task of pulling themselves out of the mini-slump in the second game.
"All season we've talked about bouncing back when we're down," said Guerra. "We just needed to play the way we're capable of and put the pressure back on them."
The Raiders put an exclamation point on the victory by not allowing the Blue Devils a single offensive point in the final game.
"Our girls were very relaxed out there," said Haff. "Mt. Lebanon is a good team, but they just made some errors at the wrong time."
Pavlick tallied nine service points and five kills for the Raiders, while DuBois (10), Laurie Lindner (7) and Lindsey Skorupan (7) combined for 24 kills.
Junior Juliana Traut led Mt. Lebanon (14-3) with eight kills.
"The core of this team has been together for three years," said Begor. "And they missed the playoffs the last two seasons, so for them to get to this level, it really means a lot."
Both teams will now prepare for the PIAA Class AAA playoffs, which begin Tuesday.
Seneca Valley will take on City League champ Carrick at 7:30 p.m. at North Hills High School.
Also on Tuesday, Mt. Lebanon will battle Erie McDowell, the District 10 champion.
Pine-Richland, the only team to defeat Seneca Valley in a regulation match this season, earned a spot in the PIAA field by defeating Penn-Trafford in a consolation match Saturday. The Rams will open the state playoffs against District 6 champ State College.
