Rockets advance

Last year, the Slippery Rock High School volleyball team was 18-0 heading into the playoffs.

The Rockets survived the first round, but was eliminated in the semifinals.

This year, Slippery Rock started the season 3-4 and needed to win its last five matches to get into the playoffs, which it did.

Now, after winning two out of three matches in the District 10 Class AA playoffs at Meadville High School Thursday night, the Rockets are right back where they were a season ago.

"We played well," said Slippery Rock coach Greg Dugan after his Rockets rolled over Eisenhower 25-7, 25-14 and beat North East 20-25, 25-16, 25-23. "We had a pretty good day today."

Sarah Yakima had six aces and Kristin Staugh added six points and 12 assists in the win over Eisenhower. Against North East, Yakima had five points, nine digs and seven kills and Staugh added six points and 27 assists.

Slippery Rock (10-5) fell to Titusville 25-10, 25-13 in the final match of the night, but still advanced to the semifinals and finals, which will be held Saturday afternoon in Meadville.

"We made it to Saturday and are right where we were last year," Dugan said. "If we win that first match, anything can happen. Hopefully, we can get into the state playoffs."

Grove City did not advance.
