Penn-Trafford becomes Seneca's latest victim

PLUM - The Seneca Valley girls volleyball team didn't care that Penn-Trafford had won its section after losing just one regular season match.

The Raiders were bound and determined to make quick work of yet another opponent.

And they did.

Seneca swept its second straight Class AAA playoff match by scores of 25-11, 25-10 and 25-9, this time over the Section 1-AAA champion Warriors in a district semifinal Thursday night at Plum High School.

The win sends the Raiders (12-1) to the WPIAL title match for the first time in school history to play Mt. Lebanon at 6 p.m. Saturday at North Allegheny High School.

Laura DuBois tallied 12 service points and seven kills while teammates Lindsey Skorupan and Laurie Lindner contributed nine and eight kills, respectively, to lead the win.

Senior Jill Bixler tallied six kills for Penn-Trafford.

"We were very shaky in every part of our game, from passing to setting and so on," said Warriors coach Jim Schull. "But some of that was due to the competition. Seneca Valley is a great team."

The Raiders once again did not allow their opponent to gain any momentum on offense. The most consecutive service points the Warriors scored against Seneca were two, and they did that once in each game.

After 10 possessions in the first game, Seneca held a 14-7 lead.

Junior Chelsey Pavlick stepped behind the service line with her team up 18-11 later in the game and served the final seven points to give the Raiders a 1-0 advantage.

The Warriors (14-2) opened the second contest with a quick 3-0 lead, but it soon evaporated.

Seneca Valley managed to move in front 9-7 before Lindner scored eight straight points for a 17-7 cushion. The Raiders easily closed the deal, just as they would do in the third game.

"I'd say we're playing our best volleyball of the year," said Raiders coach Heather Haff. "Across the board, all the girls are playing consistently and competitively."

Seneca Valley also ended Penn-Trafford's WPIAL title hopes last season with a 3-0 decision in the quarterfinals.

The only team to beat Seneca Valley this season in a regulation match was Pine-Richland, who lost to Mt. Lebanon in Thursday's other semifinal by a 3-1 score.

Seneca Valley and Mt. Lebanon are both guaranteed spots in the PIAA Class AAA playoffs, which begin next week.

The third and final spot in the state playoffs will be decided when Penn-Trafford and Pine-Richland battle in a consolation match Saturday at a site and time to be determined.
