Raiders rout Lions in three-game sweep

PLUM - The second game didn't break the Greensburg-Salem volleyball team's spirit, but it sure put it behind the eight ball.

After taking the first game of a WPIAL Class AAA volleyball playoff at Plum High School, the Seneca Valley Raiders blitzed the Golden Lions 25-4 in the second game before pulling out a thrilling 27-25 win in Game 3 to complete the sweep Tuesday night.

The Raiders (11-1) will take on the Penn-Trafford-Bethel Park winner in the semifinals Thursday at a site and time to be determined.

The victory came less than two weeks after Greensburg-Salem defeated Seneca Valley in the championship game of the North Allegheny Tournament.

"I'm actually glad (Greensburg-Salem) beat us in the tournament," said Seneca Valley coach Heather Haff. "It gave our girls a bit more fire coming into tonight."

Seneca Valley held a 20-14 lead in the final game before the Lions went on an 11-4 run to take a 25-24 lead.

After forcing a sideout that tied the game at 25, Seneca Valley senior Kristi Schutte served the last two points for the victory.

"I'm proud of our players because they didn't quit," said Lions coach Brian Switala. "They played inspired volleyball and took a very good team down to the wire in that third game."

The Lions, who finished in second place in Section 1-AAA, struggled with consistency all night, especially on their own possessions.

Greensburg-Salem (11-3) tallied just 13 service points in the three games.

"(Seneca Valley) passed the ball and ran its middle attack very well, and those are things they did not do well when we beat them," said Switala. "Their middle hitters can take over a game."

The Raiders' middle hitters, led by senior Lindsey Skorupan, helped Seneca control the tempo of play until the Lions' run late in the third game.

"Momentum was on our side for the majority of the game," said Haff. "When we lost to them, they had us on the defensive most of the game."

The first game was closely contested, with Seneca Valley leading 11-7 after 10 possessions.

The Raiders then wrapped up the game with a 14-5 run.

By the time the Lions gained possession in the second game, they were trailing 7-0. It took the Raiders just five possessions to reach 25 points.

Senior outside hitter Laura DuBois led Seneca Valley with 11 service points while Mallory DeMarco had nine.
