KC boys earn OT win

For two consecutive seasons, the Northern Potter boys soccer team has traveled to Karns City to play the District 9 Class A semifinals - and won.

On Monday, it was time for the Gremlins to return the favor.

The Gremlins took the four-hour bus trip to Ulysses and came away with a 3-2 overtime victory, thanks to Andrew Harmon's goal eight minutes into the extra period.

The Gremlins (15-4) defeated Redbank Valley 3-2 in the fourth overtime period in Thursday's quarterfinal game.

"Only three of these kids were on our last District 9 title team (in 2001)," said Karns City coach Roy Parker.

"The big thing was getting on the bus for four hours, go to a visiting field, a small field which hurts us, and come back to win it," Parker added.

Northern Potter grabbed a 1-0 lead before Mark Ferguson countered with the game's next two goals, off assists by Nathan Knox and Zach Angert.

Northern Potter tied the game at 2 with seven minutes remaining in regulation before Harmon's overtime heroics.

Mike Lopresti made eight saves in the game, "including five outstanding saves in the second half," said Parker.

"Another thing that really helped was the support of the school and parents. It was darn near like a home game. That was big time," Parker added.

Several of Parker's players were members of the boys cross country team that tied Northern Potter for first place at the District 9 Championships last Saturday.

Northern Potter, however, won the title because of the tiebreaker although both teams still advanced to Saturday's PIAA Championships in Hershey.

But first, the soccer team is scheduled to play for the District 9 Championship Thursday against the DuBois Central Catholic-Ridgway winner.
