Seneca's future looks bright in 37-12 win
JACKSON TWP - Seneca Valley football coach Ron Butschle got a glimpse of what the future could hold for his program.
He liked what he saw.
The Raiders received two outstanding performances from players who will return in 2005 in a 37-12 blowout victory over Fox Chapel in the season finale Thursday at Raider Stadium.
Sophomore running back Nate Bradley rushed 13 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns, including a 95-yard romp in the second quarter. It is the longest run in Seneca Valley history. Brian Buerkle held the previous standard of 85 yards vs. Kittanning in 1986.
Junior quarterback Kevan Smith completed 10 of 20 passes for 264 yards and three scores.
It all added up to Seneca Valley outgaining Fox Chapel in total yards, 492-219.
"We knew we had some kids with big-play capability," said Butschle. "This game gave us a chance to give some of our underclassmen something to build on."
The win kept the Raiders (1-9) from finishing a season winless for the first time in program history.
"I'm just relieved," added Butschle. "I'm happy for the seniors. It's been a long road, but I told the players that if we could win tonight, a lot of the disappointment from this season would be forgotten."
The Foxes (0-10) struck first on quarterback Michael Murray's 2-yard sneak in the opening period.
The Raiders answered with Smith's first scoring-strike of the night, a 52-yard bomb to Zach Duggan on the ensuing drive.
Fox Chapel's Ed Dannenmueller, who gained 131 yards on 20 carries, broke through the Raiders' defense for a 56-yard touchdown run with 9:30 left in the first half.
The score put the visitors up 12-7, but that would be the last lead they saw in the game.
The Raiders broke through for 20 points in a 2:07 span just before halftime to take a 27-12 lead at the break.
The score that sparked the spree was Bradley's 36-yard run with 2:23 left in the second quarter. It was the shortest touchdown the Raiders would score all night.
"Seneca was bigger than us up front," said Fox Chapel coach Todd Massack. "They pushed us around. And when we did have a guy in position to make a play, he missed the tackle."
After forcing a Fox Chapel punt, the Raiders were pinned deep in their own end when Bradley broke off his 95-yard run.
Smith connected with senior Jeremy Gorniak on a 51-yard passing play that concluded the avalanche of points with 16 seconds remaining in the half.
Bradley added a 60-yard touchdown reception on a screen pass from Smith in the third quarter and senior Mark Renyck booted a 27-yard field goal to cap the scoring.
"I think this program's got a bright future," said Butschle. "But we've got to work very hard in conditioning during the off-season between December and August."
Seneca Valley last finished 1-9 in 1983.
