Mistakes costly to Butler in season-ending 17-14 loss
BUTLER TWP - Both teams made mistakes. Butler made the most critical one.
Protecting a 14-10 lead in the closing minutes Thursday night at Art Bernardi Stadium, Golden Tornado defenders Dan Tatangelo and Josh Wachter combined to sack Norwin quarterback Josh Seabold on fourth-and-5 from the Butler 22-yard line.
Instead of taking possession with less than four minutes remaining, however, Butler was flagged for defensive holding.
Four plays later, Seabold connected with running back Zach Miller for a 10-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-8 and the Knights (2-8) escaped with a come-from-behind 17-14 football victory.
"I'll have to see the play," Butler coach Garry Cathell said. "We couldn't sustain anything tonight and stupid mistakes hurt us."
Butler ended the season at 1-9, its worst record since finishing 1-8 in 1948.
The Tornado took advantage of a pair of fumbled punt returns to jump on Norwin for a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
Tatangelo recovered the first fumbled punt at the Knights 25-yard line. Four plays later, Nick Monteleone found Wachter for an 8-yard touchdown pass.
Shane Snyder recovered Norwin's second fumbled punt at the Knights 33. Five plays later, Monteleone connected with Bob Alexander for a 19-yard scoring pass.
Norwin's only three first downs of the first half occurred on the same drive. The Knights marched 52 yards in 11 plays for a Rege Flowers 32-yard field goal.
Norwin managed just 56 yards of offense in the first half and trailed 14-3 at intermission.
"I'm proud of the way our kids fought back," Norwin coach Dan Conwell said. "We've been playing pretty good defense all year.
"We've been laying a foundation all year and tonight, we finally saw it take hold."
Matt Hornyak recovered a Butler fumble at the Tornado 26-yard line with 7:07 left in the third quarter before Seabold found Flowers for a 27-yard touchdown toss to cut the gap to 14-10.
Norwin's Mike Juricich intercepted a Monteleone pass at midfield on Butler's next possession. The Knights drove to the Butler 15-yard line, but the Tornado's Frank Kowalkowski recovered a fumble there to stop the threat.
Norwin drove 49 yards in 11 plays for the deciding score, converting two fourth-downs. On fourth-and-4 from the Butler 43, Drew Rutkowski, who fumbled the punts earlier in the game, gained redemption by running 17 yards on a reverse.
Miller caught the touchdown pass on fourth-and-8 with 3:26 remaining.
Butler converted two first downs on its final possession. But on fourth-and-7 from the Norwin 35, Monteleone's pass deflected off Noah Hartung's chest with 1:10 left and the game was over.
It marked the third time this season Butler lost a lead in the final quarter, doing so against Bethel Park and Hempfield.
"We have a lot of work to do," Cathell said. "I just hope this wasn't my last game."
The third-year coach admitted to being concerned about his future at Butler.
"We'll get back in the weight room in December," he said. "We have to pick the kids back up and get at it. But first we'll give them time away from the coaches and the coaches time away from them. It's been a long haul."
Conwell defended Cathell's situation this season.
"He's playing a lot of sophomores and his kids played a heckuva game, as did ours," Conwell said. "Both of these teams left it all out there tonight.
"Don't tell the players and coaches on either team this game didn't mean anything. Anyone who didn't come out to watch this game missed a great high school football game."
Notes:
Norwin's 17 points marked a season-high. … Alexander rushed for 90 yards and fell eight short of 1,000 for the season.
