Tale of two streaks with Moniteau, Clarion-Limestone

Two streaks will continue or two streaks will end in Clarion Friday night.

Moniteau coach Steve Wilson hopes for the latter when his Warriors (4-4) travel to unbeaten Clarion-Limestone for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

The Warriors have dropped four straight games while the Lions have won all 17 regular season games they have played under second-year head coach Todd Smith.

"We're hoping to use a big win up there to end their streak and give us something positive to lead into the playoffs with," Wilson said.

Moniteau will enter District 9 postseason play win or lose, since it enters Friday's game with a 4-3 record in the district.

C-L has outscored its opponents 301-97 this year and had allowed only 56 points - eight per game - before defeating Redbank Valley 42-41 in overtime last week.

The Lions lost quarterback Hayden Johnston - the only District 9 quarterback to pass for 4,000 yards and rush for 2,000 in a prep career - to a torn spleen in that game.

Johnston threw for 234 yards and rushed for 82 against Redbank. He finished this season with 1,558 yards passing, 24 TDs and four interceptions, 499 yards rushing and six TDs.

"We suffered a few other injuries, too, that made us move some people around," Smith said. "And Redbank has a pretty good football team.

"Hayden's still in the hospital, but it doesn't look like they'll have to remove his spleen. It appears he'll regain 95 percent use of it and that's good news."

The bad news is that Johnston's football career is over.

"From a competitive standpoint, you always want to play a team at its best," Wilson said. "We wish Hayden was playing and we wish him well in his recovery.

"He's their middle linebacker as well, so I'm sure they have a void to fill defensively."

Sophomore Scott Davis - with more than 400 yards rushing and receiving - has been shifted to quarterback for C-L.

"Scott's our quarterback of the future," Smith said. "We've tweaked the offense a little to suit him, but we'll be doing most of the same stuff we've been doing."

That means the Lions will be shifting skilled people around.

Erik White has 24 catches for 469 yards and 11 touchdowns. David "Tuffy" Brooks has 23 catches for 425 yards and three scores.

Both players run the ball from scrimmage as well.

Moniteau hopes to revitalize its fading passing game. Garth Kohlmeyer has thrown eight interceptions since his last touchdown pass.

Eric Hilliard has 19 catches for 366 yards and five TDs on the year, but has rarely touched the ball in recent weeks.

"We've been working on some little things in our blocking schemes to try to get our passing game moving again," Wilson said.

One constant for the Warriors has been fullback Matt Schandelmeier, who enters this game with 882 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns. He remains in contention for the Butler County scoring title.

"That kid is a whale of a football player on both sides of the ball," Smith said.

Moniteau's defense has been playing consistently well despite the four-game losing streak.

"Our defensive tackles, Ryan Flick and Aaron Dollman, have been fighting off double-teams to put our linebackers in position to make tackles," Wilson said. "They've been our unsung heroes.

"We've done a good job of forcing teams to throw when they don't want to. We especially want to do that this week since C-L has a new quarterback in there."

Clarion-Limestone leads the series between the teams, 18-7, and has won 14 in a row. Moniteau has not defeated the Lions since 1986.
