Last chance for Raiders, Foxes to avoid winless campaign
No team wants to finish a season without a win.
Seneca Valley and Fox Chapel will both have one more chance to avoid that fate.
The teams will square off at 7 p.m. Thursday at Raider Stadium to conclude disappointing seasons.
"We're pretty much in the same boat," said Seneca Valley coach Ron Butschle. "This game is certainly not meaningless to us. We want to be able to have something positive to look back on after a rough season. And I'm sure (Fox Chapel) feels the same."
The Foxes (0-9) concluded their Quad Southwest slate with a 34-6 loss to Plum last Friday. After scoring 14 points in the season opener against Hampton, Fox Chapel has not scored more than seven points in any of the last eight games. They have lost each contest by an average score of 39-5.
Six of the Foxes losses have come by at least 27 points.
"We are a young team with just nine seniors," said Fox Chapel coach Todd Massack. "And injuries have really hurt us."
The Foxes lost their starting quarterback (Mark Covelli) and running back (Tom Tonti) to shoulder injuries during the course of the season.
Junior Michael Murray, who played wide receiver last year, is now under center, while the running game has become a committee approach.
Senior Ed Dannenmueller, junior Paul DeLuca and sophomore Anthony Schulli are all expected to see their share of carries against the Raiders.
Seneca's running game has fallen squarely on the shoulders of sophomore Nate Bradley after injuries to Evan Braithwaite and Pat Prazer.
In the last two games, Bradley has rushed the ball 23 times for 58 yards, but he may see more daylight against the Foxes.
"We've had trouble stopping the run and pass," said Massack. "It's just a question of becoming consistent.
"But the kids' effort has been there all season," said Massack. "They are preparing for this game just like it was a section game."
For the second straight week, junior Kevan Smith will start at quarterback for the Raiders (0-9).
Smith, who spent the first half of the season recovering from a broken left hand, completed 15 of 31 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown in last week's 33-15 defeat to Butler.
"He's still rusty," said Butschle. "But we've seen some good things out of him. We're getting him ready for next year."
