Karns City leery of desperate Union team

Desperate times call for desperate measures. That's what worries Karns City coach Ed Conto.

The Gremlins will host Union (0-8) for a 7 p.m. kickoff that will close out the regular-season schedule.

"Union is in a situation where they can do anything to get a win," said Conto. "Last week (against Kennedy Catholic, a 46-25 defeat), they tried two fake punts.

"You don't know what they'll do, but we'll have to be prepared," he added.

Union is led by junior tailback Colton Davis, who has rushed for 463 yards this season.

Davis, who was moved from fullback to tailback, rushed for 103 yards on 17 carries against the Eagles last week.

"He is the type of back you want to handle the ball more," said Union coach Tom Kidder.

"He seems like a good hard runner," said Conto. "He's very athletic."

Union was able to get its offense going against Kennedy Catholic Saturday, rolling up 328 yards in the loss.

The biggest move might have been shifting Nate Carmichael from tight end to tackle.

"We've made a couple of moves that have helped," said Kidder. "We moved Nate from tight end to tackle and he handled the move well."

Union also got its passing game going. Quarterback Josh Holden threw for 112 yards and a pair of scores against Kennedy Catholic - all to Brett Moore.

Clint Lineman also scored a pair of rushing touchdowns.

"Union has always had some talented kids," said Conto. "They have kids who can make plays. They've struggled, but they have people who are dangerous.

"I have to give those kids credit. Anyone who keeps it going and plays hard … They started the year with 20 kids. There are a lot of kids sitting home watching TV or doing nothing and they're still out there playing," Conto added.

The Gremlins (4-4, 3-3) are coming of a tough 49-10 non-conference loss to Bradford.

Steve Black completed 15 of 21 passes for 146 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the game. For the year, he's completed 81 of 140 passes for 1,122 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The scoring pass went to David Black, who has 44 catches for 671 yards and eight TDs.

"We were real happy that our kids didn't quit," said Conto. "But, we were disappointed because we could stop them if the kids would have done what we tell them.

"Bradford was so quick too. Offensively we were moving the ball, but just not getting the points for the yards (292) we were getting," Conto added.

The Golden Knights will have a tough test against the Gremlins, who beat Union 74-12 last season in the final game.

"I'd like to give them a game," Kidder said. "But I'm hoping we can continue to improve."
