Java, jazz series kicks off

BUTLER TWP - Butler County Community College begins its 2004-05 Java and Jazz Series with the legendary Artie Shaw Orchestra.

The group will perform at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5 in Succop Theater on campus.

Four more artists are scheduled to perform during the Java and Jazz Series, which runs through May 13. They are:

Hot Jazz for a Cold Winter's Night II - 7:30 p.m. Jan. 14. The Pittsburgh Jazz Society's Big Band will be featured, performing big band favorites and new music.

Swingstation - 7:30 p.m. Feb. 4. This group offers a vocal celebration of jazz and swing music.

Slippery Rock University Jazz Band and Butler Golden Tornado Big Band - 7:30 p.m. April 29. These two groups will perform big band classics and hits.

Betty Douglas and Friends - 7:30 p.m. May 13. Douglas is a well-known musician and artist from Rochester, Beaver County.

Theater director Larry Stock said some special features will be offered during this year's series.

Cummings Coffee Shop of Butler will sell items in the lobby at each event. Anyone who has a ticket to a series performance is entitled to a regular cup of coffee or decaffeinated coffee or 50-cents off a specialty drink, Stock said.

Season tickets for the jazz series are available for $60, which saves $15 if tickets for each show were bought individually.
