Senior night sour for Gremlins
KARNS CITY - Senior Night ended on a sour note for the Karns City High School football team Friday.
The Gremlins were dominated on their home turf, falling to Bradford 49-10 in a non-conference matchup.
The Gremlins reached the scoreboard first on a 33-yard field goal from senior Luke McClaine.
Bradford answered right back when senior running back Morgan O'Brien bolted 75 yards to score the first of his two touchdowns of the night.
Karns City turned the ball over on its next possession when Bradford linebacker Garrett McEwen stripped the ball from the Gremlins' Wayne Harris and returned it 24-yards for the score.
"That was a big (turnover) for us," Bradford coach Steve Ackerman said. "We stripped the ball there and the defense scored. I think that was the turning point."
Karns City was plagued by turnovers all night. The Gremlins fumbled the ball three times and threw two interceptions.
Bradford scored again early in the second quarter when senior Mike Austin punched it in from 1-yard away.
Karns City scored its final points of the game on a 20-yard pass from junior quarterback Stephen Black to senior receiver David Black.
Bradford continued to take advantage of the Gremlins' defense and scored another rushing touchdown on a 1-yard run by senior Dave Snyder.
Bradford managed to score another touchdown in the first half on a 14-yard scamper from senior Nate Westlake.
Bradford used reverses and misdirection on nearly every rushing play to throw off the defense of Karns City.
"It worked early and we just decided to stick with it," Ackerman said.
"We just didn't play it right," Karns City coach Ed Conto said. "We had players in position, they just didn't execute."
Neither team managed to put any points on the board in the third period.
Bradford continued its successful rushing attack in the fourth quarter.
Morgan O'Brien broke loose from 24-yards out, and added another rushing touchdown.
"When we get into a big game, we just don't play our (defense)," Conto said.
Bradford scored the final touchdown of the game when junior Josh Holleran stabbed it in from the 2.
"It wasn't turnovers, it was a lack of execution on defense," Conto said. "Offensively we were moving the ball well, but because they're scoring, the guy is kicking it in the end zone. That leaves us starting at the 20, and you know how hard it is in high school football to put together an 80-yard drive."
Karns City quarterback Stephen Black completed 15 passes for 146 yards. Bradford running back Morgan O'Brien rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns on only 10 carries.
