Moniteau looks to stop three-game skid Friday at Clarion

Stop the bleeding.

That's the mission for Moniteau and Clarion when the two meet for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday at Clarion University's stadium.

The Warriors (4-3) have dropped three straight games while the Bobcats (5-2) have lost two in a row.

"I'm not too concerned with how we're playing," Clarion coach Larry Wiser said. "We just played two undefeated football teams and fell victim to two great players."

Clarion is coming off losses to Clarion-Limestone (28-12), led by versatile quarterback Hayden Johnston, and Clearfield (36-12), led by a 341-yard rushing performance by Josh Harbold.

"That kid may be the best running back I've ever seen in District 9," Wiser said.

Moniteau also has lost to good teams, bowing to unbeaten Linsly Institute (W.Va.) by a 39-14 count before losing KSAC games to Karns City (20-7) and Redbank Valley (23-9).

The once-deadly Warrior passing game has been limited to four completions in 22 attempts for 48 yards, no touchdowns and four interceptions the past two weeks.

"We need to put ourselves in better passing situations on second and third down," Moniteau coach Steve Wilson said. "Teams have been able to drop four defensive backs against us because we've thrown when we have to - not when we want to - and that's never good."

The Warriors also want to make Clarion throw the football. Sean Wolf has completed 23 of 48 passes for 386 yards, seven touchdowns and five interceptions.

The Bobcats' leading receiver is running back Manny Carpin with 13 catches for 244 yards.

"They're big up front, they like to control the ball and chew up clock," Wilson said. "We want to force them to throw the ball."

Chris McSwain leads the Bobcats with 935 yards rushing and eight touchdowns. Matt Schandelmeier leads the Warriors with 765 yards and 11 TDs on the ground.

"Chris is a hard runner who doesn't have a lot of speed, but he can run it up inside," Wiser said.

"We have to find a way to contain their fullback," he added. "He's perfect for that position. I've been watching films and that kid breaks two or three tackles on every sweep."

While Eric Hilliard has 18 catches for 358 yards and five TDs for Moniteau, the Warriors haven't thrown a touchdown pass in any of their three losses.

Justin Arner will likely cover Hilliard Friday.

"Justin held Mike Scoggins of Clearfield to one catch last week and he's one of the top receivers in the district," Wiser said.

Wilson credited linebackers Clay Campbell and Ryan Protzman with outstanding efforts against Redbank Valley last week.

"We got off to a good start in that game, which was one of our goals," Wilson said. "Then we couldn't get any field position in the second half.

"Redbank controlled the ball on us and we can't let that happen again. Our morale is still up and our kids are fired up, ready to go.

"We're still looking to finish 6-3. We believe we're going to go up there and win a football game," he added.
