Tigers' ground game too much for Seneca
JACKSON TWP - Stopping the run has been a problem for the Seneca Valley defense all season long.
And North Allegheny knew it.
Andrew McMillen led the Tigers' rushing attack with 100 yards on 11 carries as NA routed Seneca Valley 42-14 on Homecoming Night at Raiders Stadium Friday.
Also starring in the Tigers' backfield were Josh Cipkala-Gaffin with two rushing touchdowns and Craig Howarth with 93 yards.
"That was pretty much the game," said Raiders football coach Ron Butschle of NA's offensive game plan. "There wasn't much of a secret as to what they wanted to do, and they executed it."
The Tigers outrushed Seneca 298-120.
After a scoreless first quarter, North Allegheny scored three touchdowns in a six-minute span of the second to take control of the game.
"All of our backs did a great job tonight," said NA coach Jim Rankin. "That's our game: running the ball."
The Raiders (0-7, 0-5) took the opening kickoff and moved the ball at will.
SV quarterback Marshall Lee completed three passes to senior wideout Jim Paulin for 34 yards on the drive, but it stalled at North Allegheny's 31-yard line.
"(Seneca) was moving the ball well through the air there at the beginning of the game," said Rankin. "But the big thing for us was the second quarter, that's when we started making some big plays."
The Tigers' first possession of the second period began at their own 21.
With McMillen, Howarth and John Woodruff sharing carries, NA moved the ball 77 yards in just seven plays before McMillen tallied the last two yards on his lone touchdown of the game.
After the Raiders went three and out, the Tigers put together a similar drive of 53 yards in six plays that was capped by Cipkala-Gaffin's three-yard run.
Before the half was out, NA quarterback Andrew Krewatch connected with halfback Billy Knight on a 56-yard scoring strike for the 21-0 advantage.
Knight caught the ball 12 yards beyond the line of scrimmage and outran two defenders to paydirt.
"We noticed that (Seneca) was man-to-man on Billy," said Rankin. "And Andrew made a nice throw."
With NA leading 28-0, the Raiders got on the board late in the third quarter.
Lee intercepted a Krewatch pass and returned it 44 yards to the Tigers' 19-yard line.
Four plays later, junior quarterback Kevan Smith found tight end Shaun Eagle for a 5-yard touchdown.
Smith, who split time with Lee at quarterback, was returning from a broken right arm suffered in the summer. He completed three of 10 passes for 27 yards and the score.
"With Kevan just getting healthy, we wanted to get him in there so he could get his feet wet," Butschle said.
Lee capped the scoring with his 8-yard run in the fourth period.
SV starting tailback Evan Braithwaite left the game in the first quarter with a separated left shoulder.
There was good news and bad news regarding his replacement.
Junior Pat Prazer tallied the first 100-yard game this year for the Raiders (15 carries for 113 yards), but he injured his left leg near the end of the game.
"We're not sure on his status right now," said Butschle. "But his play tonight was one of the few bright spots."
The Tigers' win, coupled with Bethel Park's defeat of Butler, clinches a playoff spot for the Tigers.
The Raiders are officially out of the Quad A playoff hunt and will travel to Upper St. Clair next Friday.
