Redbank Valley uses special teams to stop A-C Valley

FOXBURG - Redbank Valley must have done some extra work on special teams this week in practice.

The Bulldogs returned a kickoff for a touchdown and blocked a punt that led to a score on their way to a 35-20 football victory over feisty A-C Valley Friday night.

"I told the kids, nobody gives you anything," said Redbank Valley coach Ed Wasilowski. "You've got to give A-C Valley credit, they played a good ballgame tonight."

Redbank got on the board early when Skylar Smith broke through the middle of the line and raced 11 yards for the score.

The score was set up when Ryan Toth blocked an A-C Valley punt and recovered it at the Falcon 11-yard line.

Toth had four sacks and the blocked kick.

"I told (Toth) coming out at halftime that this is a great time to start playing well," said Wasilowski. "(Toth) was great at coming off the corner and disrupted them all game."

With 2:37 left in the opening quarter, Bryce Miller added to the Bulldog lead by scampering 24 yards for a touchdown.

Redbank scored again on its first drive of the second quarter when Smith bulled his way six yards for the score.

The scoring opportunity was set up when Brandon Johnston hauled in a 21-yard pass from Jason Smith at the Falcon 6-yard line.

A-C Valley closed the gap to 21-8 with 37 seconds left until halftime when Trevor Miller recovered a blocked punt in the end zone.

However, the Falcon momentum lasted only through halftime.

Skylar Smith returned the second-half kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown.

Skylar Smith was the Bulldogs' offensive leader, rushing for 136 yards and scoring three touchdowns.

Redbank scored again 1:18 later when Johnston slashed his way into the end zone from nine yards away.

Jason Smith intercepted a Luis Goncalves pass and returned it 51 yards to set up the score.

The Falcons answered with 3:37 left in the third quarter when Brian Rembold threw a 55-yard bomb to Luis Goncalves, who was streaking down the left sideline.

Rembold completed three passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns.

"We wanted to give these guys a game, and I think we did that," said A-C Valley coach Randy Lemmon. "If we didn't give up that kick return for a touchdown, it might have been a different game."

Redbank Valley will travel to Moniteau while A-C Valley hosts Karns City.

"I told the kids, you got to win next week if you hope to continue this thing," Lemmon said.
