Butler County's great daily newspaper

Jeer:

The incidents of theft of, or damage to, political signs in this election campaign season demonstrate the immaturity and shallow thinking of those perpetrating the losses and destruction.

In this free nation, people have a right to express their political preferences vocally, in writing and by way of visual displays such as political signs and bumper stickers. It doesn't make someone less of an American or less patriotic because he or she embraces an opinion different from one's own.

Strong support for a particular candidate doesn't authorize anyone to thwart the expressions of others. The best advice for people who encounter signs of a candidate whom they oppose is to just look the other way.

Unfortunately, especially regarding the presidential race, both Republicans and Democrats apparently are guilty of political expression via theft or destruction. Such actions are a disgrace to the Founding Fathers' accomplishment of creating a land of free speech.

It would be uplifting if the intensity that the thefts and damage reveal were redirected toward helping to ensure the largest voter turnout in Butler County history.
