Unbeatens clash in Linsly, Moniteau

Moniteau is facing a virtual unknown Friday night - and is looking forward to it.

The Warriors (4-0) host Linsly, a private prep school in Wheeling, W.Va., also 4-0, for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday night.

"All we need to know is they're undefeated and have beaten some pretty good football teams," Moniteau coach Steve Wilson said. "We're looking forward to this game. We're going to learn a lot about ourselves."

Moniteau has outscored its last three opponents 109-6, but those three opponents have just one win among them.

Linsly has defeated Steubenville (Ohio) Catholic Central 21-12, Nichols 55-14, Carlynton 39-14 and Harrison Central (Ohio) 40-27.

The Cadets finished 5-5 in 2003 under veteran coach Terry Depew, but returned 25 lettermen this season.

"We're improving every week," Depew said. "Harrison Central was 3-1 when they played us, so that was a nice win for our kids.

"Our skilled players have done well and our defense has been a true team effort. We've had a different player lead us in tackles all four games, and I like that," he added.

Quarterback Jason Pyles has thrown for 459 yards for the Cadets. Running back Tony Walls has 566 yards rushing and is one of Pyles' favorite targets.

"Walls is an efficient back," Depew said. "He's quick enough and he's very instinctive. He knows how to make people miss."

Jon Kepner leads a quartet of receivers with three touchdown catches. Wingback Waine Greene has caught 10 passes.

"They have a great athlete at quarterback and their running back and slotback have a lot of speed," Wilson said.

"West Shamokin dropped us over the winter and we were looking for a quality replacement. This game is good timing for us with the tough part of our conference schedule following.

"We want to come out of this non-conference game with nobody hurt. That's the main thing," Wilson added.

Fullback Matt Schandelmeier figures to see plenty of action Friday. He has 54 carries for 419 yards and nine touchdowns on the campaign.

"We lean on Matt quite a bit every game, but especially in this one," Wilson said. "We want to play ball control and keep their dangerous offense on the sidelines.

"They have an excellent middle linebacker Matt's looking forward to going one-on-one with, too."

Garth Kohlmeyer has completed 30 of 54 passes for 580 yards, 10 touchdowns and no interceptions. Eric Hilliard has 13 catches for 317 yards and five scores.

Adam Cousins is emerging as the tailback in Moniteau's backfield. He has 21 carries for 201 yards.

"Being a first-year starter, I thought Garth would have a couple of interceptions by now," Wilson admitted. "He's not making decisions like a third-year starter would, but he's not making mistakes that a first-year starter would, either."

Depew recognizes the formidable opponent his team is taking on Friday.

"We always seem to play a team that's having an up year when we fill an open date," Depew said. "They like to attack defensively, they have a big fullback and they can throw the ball.

"We'll have our hands full. But we can do a few things, too."
