Raiders have tunnel-vision toward first win of season

There's good news and bad news for the Seneca Valley Raiders.

The bad news is the team has yet to win a Quad North game this season.

The good news is the team is currently tied for the final playoff spot in the conference.

Seneca Valley, North Allegheny and Butler are all 0-3 in the Quad North. At least one of those teams will make the playoffs, with the conference sending six of its eight teams to the Quad A postseason-field.

But postseason play is the furthest thing from Ron Butschle's mind.

"Right now we are concentrating on our next game and getting that first win," said the Raiders' coach. "We're not looking any further than that at this point."

That next game is against Shaler (2-3, 1-2) on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.

Seneca (0-5, 0-3) catches a Titan team that has lost two of its last three games, the most recent being a 28-0 defeat to Bethel Park last week.

"We've had trouble playing well consistently," said Shaler coach Jacque DeMatteo. "We'll go out and play well one week and then play as if we're on vacation the next."

Shaler relies on its ground game to generate scoring opportunities.

Senior halfback Brandon McNearney leads the way, followed by senior Jonathan Flage.

Quarterback Matt Davis' favorite target is Tom Neiman (18 catches for 181 yards).

"(Shaler) has a quarterback who throws well and two big backs who move the ball for them," said Butschle.

The Titans defense is expecting to see a lot of passes being thrown by Seneca Valley quarterback Marshall Lee, who had 19 completions for 204 yards and two scores in last week's 54-30 loss to Mt. Lebanon.

"We told our guys not to look at records to determine how good a team is," said DeMatteo. "Seneca's kids don't quit and, after watching tape, I'd say they played better against Bethel Park than we did."

Despite the fact the passing game has accounted for two-thirds of the Raiders' offensive yards this season (545 of 812), Butschle is still looking to establish his team's rushing attack.

"We go into every game looking to get the running game going," he said. "Last week, it was the passing that produced plays for us, so that's what we went with. And I thought our offensive line pass protected very well."

Seneca's junior wide receiver Zach Duggan is currently second among Butler County players with 19 receptions.

Shaler holds a 14-10 lead in the series, which began in 1964. The Titans have won three on the last four meetings, including a 21-7 decision last year.
