A-C Valley rolls to victory over Conneaut Lake

FOXBURG - Miami (Fla.) did it, so did Virginia Tech. Maybe A-C Valley should think about switching conferences, too.

By beating Conneaut Lake 47-6 Friday, the Falcons improved their record over District 10 opponents to 2-0.

A-C Valley (2-2) tailback Rocco Crapis ran for 139 yards on 10 carries and scored three touchdowns.

"(Crapis) is playing hurt. He has a pinched nerve in his back, " said A-C Valley coach Randy Lemmon. "I didn't think I used him that much, but I guess I did."

The Falcons started the scoring early when quarterback Luis Goncalves did a 39-yard bob and weave through the Indians defense for the touchdown.

Goncalves rushed for 57 yards on 11 carries.

"A lot of those runs are not even called, (Goncalves) just sees something and goes," said Lemmon. "I told him he could do that at the beginning of the year."

The Falcons set themselves up in good field position later in the quarter when Mark Hart intercepted a pass and returned it to the Indians 25-yard line.

Two plays later, Crapis galloped 29 yards for the touchdown.

With 1:56 left in the first quarter, A-C Valley scored its third touchdown of the night when Colt Burk plowed into the end zone from the 4-yard line.

Burk ran for 43 yards on six carries and scored two touchdowns.

The Falcons defense showed some teeth in the first half when Ben Bobbert hit Conneaut Lake quarterback Brian Leonhard just as he threw, forcing an interception by Casey McBride.

The pick set up the Falcons at their own 37-yard line before they marched 63 yards on a 10-play drive that Burk punctuated when he plunged into the end zone for his second touchdown of the night.

A-C Valley held the Indians to 102 total yards and forced three turnovers.

The Falcons capped the first half scoring at the 3:25 mark when Crapis sprinted 35 yards for the touchdown. The touchdown gave the Falcons a commanding 40-0 halftime lead.

The lone bright spot for Conneaut Lake came with 2:52 left in the third quarter, when Brian Leonhard threw a 7-yard swing pass to Justin Gibbons for the Indians' lone touchdown.

"A-C Valley came to play," said Conneaut Lake coach Ray Collins. "They're physical, and I don't know if they are getting the due respect they should be getting."

"It is great for the kids," said Lemmon. "To win a ballgame here the way it has been the last four years is just tremendous."

This is the first time A-C Valley has won consecutive games since the beginning of the 2000 season.
