Moniteau hosting new-look Keystone squad

Moniteau coach Steve Wilson isn't too excited over the fact his team is 3-0 for the first time since 1960.

"I know the meat of our schedule is coming up," he said. "Yeah, we have to worry about our games now, but we have to pay even more attention to how we're playing."

The Warriors are playing pretty well.

Moniteau has outscored its opponents 124-20 so far this season and has posted shutouts in its past two games. The Warriors host Keystone (1-2) at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Panthers have undergone a lot of changes in a short period of time.

Quarterback Justin Bifano broke his ankle in an automobile accident over the summer and hasn't played this season. He has not been cleared to play Friday.

Center Zach Witkowski has been sidelined all year by injury and remains out of action. Senior tight end Adam Hilyer, also on the injured list for a while, moved to tackle.

Keystone changed its offense from a heavy passing attack to a run-oriented ball control game, led by senior Sam Swartzfager, who had 132 yards rushing through two games.

First-year head coach Jason Nellis, a longtime defensive coach on Dan Reed's staff, took over the reins when Reed resigned a week before camp started.

"There's been a lot of transition, to say the least," Nellis said. "Dan left to spend more time with family. He has four kids, all of them under age 12, and that kind of hit him right before the season started."

Mark Switzer, a freshman, has been at quarterback for Keystone. He's thrown for more than 200 yards, the bulk of which belongs to receiver Kyle McMunn.

"Mark does things you wouldn't expect a freshman quarterback to do," Nellis said. "He makes mistakes and he's learning, but he can make some plays for us."

The Panthers shut out A-C Valley 26-0 in Week 2, but have lost 46-0 and 43-13 decisions to Clarion and Karns City, respectively.

Moniteau is 20-19-3 all-time against Keystone, which is the only current Keystone-Shortway Athletic Conference school the Warriors have a winning record against.

"They've got some weapons," Wilson said. "With Swartzfager at running back and a young quarterback who throws well, they can hurt you.

"They still do a lot of things out of the shotgun and we haven't seen much of that. That's what we're focusing on in practice this week."

Keystone will have to focus on Moniteau's high-powered attack, led by quarterback Garth Kohlmeyer. The junior signal-caller has completed 25 of 43 passes for 468 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions.

Eric Hilliard has 10 catches for 237 yards and four TDs. Matt Schandelmeier has 313 yards rushing and seven TDs.

"They play with a lot of emotion and a lot of confidence," Nellis said of Moniteau. "They're a physical team with a lot of good athletes who expect to win."

Middle linebacker Clay Campbell had a fumble recovery, caused a fumble, had five solo tackles and a quarterback sack in last Saturday's 46-0 win at Union.

"Clay's always been a consistent player, but he was all over the field last week," Wilson said. "We found things to work on off last week's game film.

"We need to be more mobile up front and pick up blitzes better. We can't relax. There's a lot more work to do."
