Shaler-Butler get back to football tonight

Flood control before football.

That's the reason the Shaler at Butler high school football game, originally postponed until Saturday night, was postponed again until 6 p.m. today at Art Bernardi Stadium.

"We physically could have gotten there Saturday," Shaler coach Jacque DeMatteo said. "We wouldn't have been there mentally.

"It (flooding) is still bad down here. A lot of our players are still helping parents and grandparents recover and repair flood damage.

"There are a lot of things more important in life than a football game," DeMatteo added.

Saturday's game was postponed at 11:45 a.m. that day.

"Shaler called us and asked if we'd consider moving the game back again," said Butler coach Garry Cathell. "They said their kids weren't ready and we were happy to oblige."

Cathell said he has coached one other high school game on a Monday night - with Peters Township in 1990.

"Our field had no lights then and we played Saturday afternoons," he said. "There was a problem with the field and we couldn't use it at the last minute. We played at Burgettstown that Monday night."

Butler's band will be at the game tonight. There is a chance Friday's scheduled home game with North Hills will be moved to Saturday.

Cathell said that decision would be reached Tuesday.

"We'll evaluate our kids after Monday's game, and if we're really banged up, I'll request to Tim (athletic director O'Malley) that we push it back a day.

"To come right back Friday, which we would prefer to do, we'll need a full-scale practice Tuesday."

First, Butler and Shaler will be focused on each other.

"It's difficult, but our job as coaches is to get the kids ready to play," DeMatteo said. "I feel badly for the people who lost their businesses, their homes, their livelihoods. I wish there was something we could do to help them.

"Those people have perseverance, they work hard for things. Our kids are a product of some of those people. Hopefully, we can win this game and bring a little joy back to Shaler with us."

Freeport's game at Kittanning Saturday night also was postponed a second time and will be played at 6 p.m. today. Mars hosts Laurel at 6 p.m. today in a game rescheduled from Friday.

Summit Academy's game at Neshannock was postponed Friday and will be played at 7 p.m. today.
