Patriots pull within one win of NFL record streak
While the New England Patriots keep streaking toward a record for victories, Jerry Rice's amazing streak of receptions is over.
The Patriots won their 17th straight game, beating Arizona 23-12 Sunday and moving within one of the NFL mark for consecutive wins held by five teams. They can tie it in two weeks in Buffalo after taking a week off.
Rice, meanwhile, saw his string of games with a catch conclude at 274 when he was blanked in Oakland's 13-10 victory over the Bills.
Two more streaks ended in the second week of the schedule. The New York Giants had fallen nine straight times before getting seven takeaways in a 20-14 victory over Washington. Atlanta broke a seven-game slide against St. Louis with a 34-17 win.
Corey Dillon gained 158 yards on 32 carries for the Super Bowl champion Patriots and Tom Brady threw two first-half touchdown passes to Daniel Graham. New England (2-0) hasn't lost since Week 4 of 2003.
"We're just trying to go out each and every week and win one game. That was last year. We're trying to get something going this year," said Willie McGinest, who had two of New England's five sacks.
Eugene Wilson intercepted Josh McCown twice, leading to 10 New England points.
Former Cardinals safety Pat Tillman, killed in combat in Afghanistan, was honored in an emotional halftime ceremony in Arizona's home opener.
In Oakland, it was Ronald Curry, not Rice, making the key receptions. He caught five passes for 89 yards and a touchdown.
Rice has said he's willing to accept a lesser role for the Raiders (1-1) in exchange for wins. No passes were thrown to him until 21/2 minutes before halftime - and that was the only one. Rice looked angry near the end of the game and threw his helmet to the ground.
But afterward, he was composed.
"I try to work hard, and if things happen, they happen," Rice said. "But today it didn't happen and I'm man enough to deal with the situation. I have never backed away from it and I look forward to the next opportunity."
The last time Rice didn't catch a pass was Dec. 1, 1985.
Drew Bledsoe was sacked seven times for Buffalo (0-2).
In Tom Coughlin's home opener as Giants coach, New York (1-1) was a takeaway machine with a plus-6 turnover margin.Linebacker Barrett Green scored on a 16-yard fumble return and the Giants recovered two more fumbles and had four pickoffs against Washington (1-1), which lost for the first time in Joe Gibbs' second coaching tenure.Kurt Warner threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Tim Carter, and Steve Christie kicked two field goals, but it remained close. Washington's Patrick Ramsey, who took over in the third quarter when Mark Brunell went out with a hamstring injury, threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Clinton Portis with 12:01 to play. The Colts then marched 80 yards in 11 plays.
At Green Bay, Mike Brown's 95-yard fumble return for a touchdown lifted the Bears to only the third win over the Packers (1-1) in their last 21 meetings. But Brown, whose fifth defensive score tied a team record and was the second-longest fumble return in Bears history - team founder George Halas had a 98-yarder - suffered a suspected ruptured Achilles' tendon near the end of the game.Lovie Smith won for the first time at coach of the Bears (1-1), in great part because Brett Favre threw two interceptions and Brown went all the way with Ahman Green's fumble just before halftime.
At Kansas City, Carolina (1-1) didn't miss top offensive players Stephen Davis and Steve Smith, who are injured. DeShaun Foster victimized Kansas City's porous defense for 174 yards on 32 carries, including a team-record 71-yard run. Rookie receiver Keary Colbert had three catches for 46 yards in place of Smith. The defending AFC West champion Chiefs are 0-2 after going 13-3.
At Tampa, the Bucs (0-2) continued to flop on offense. Marcus Trufant's 41-yard interception return set up Matt Hasselbeck's second-quarter touchdown pass to Koren Robinson. Tampa turned to second-year quarterback Chris Simms, but he couldn't spark the Bucs. The Seahawks (2-0) opened with consecutive road wins for the first time in 10 years. Shaun Alexander, playing with a bruised bone in his right knee, was limited to 45 yards on 17 carries after rushing for 135 and scoring three TDs against the Saints.
At San Diego, the Jets (2-0), who normally struggle in September, rode Curtis Martin again.Martin scored on the Jets' first two possessions and became the team's career rushing leader. He had 196 yards rushing in an opening victory over Cincinnati.Martin has 11,984 yards in 10 NFL seasons, good for 11th on the career list.Chad Pennington threw two touchdown passes, and rookie safety Erik Coleman had an interception and a fumble recovery.

At Detroit, the Lions moved to 2-0 with Joey Harrington beating David Carr in the first matchup of the top two quarterbacks from the 2002 draft.Harrington threw three touchdown passes, two to rookie Roy Williams, who made spectacular catches. Harrington, the No. 3 pick two years ago, was 18-of-25 for 176 yards with one interception.Carr, taken No. 1 overall in Houston's first draft, completed 23 of 34 passes for 313 yards with two TDs and one interception. The Texans are 0-2 for the first time in their three seasons.
At Jacksonville, Quentin Griffin fumbled on the Jaguars 23 with about a minute to play.Jake Plummer drove Denver (1-1) into field-goal range, thanks partly to defensive end Lionel Barnes' personal-foul penalty. But Griffin bobbled the handoff, Akin Ayodele recovered and the Jaguars (2-0) ran out the remaining 31 seconds. The Jaguars held Griffin to 66 yards, extending their streak of not allowing a 100-yard rusher to an NFL-best 17 games. Griffin had 156 yards last week against Kansas City.
