Indians have their way with struggling Raiders

WEST VIEW - The North Hills football team's game plan was simple: The Indians did what they wanted when they wanted all night long.

Connor Corcoran rushed for 168 yards and four touchdowns, three of them in the first quarter, as North Hills dominated Seneca Valley to the tune of a 42-0 shutout Saturday night at Martorelli Stadium.

As for the Raiders' offense, the running game struggled again with 23 attempts netting just 27 yards.

SV's Marshall Lee completed nine of 16 passes for 83 yards and an interception.

"(Marshall) was able to make a few plays through the air," said Seneca Valley coach Ron Butschle. "But when you struggle to run the ball as much as we've done, that really puts you in a bind."

The key was North Hills' ability to control the line of scrimmage.

"Seneca Valley is an inexperienced group," said Indians coach Jack McCurry. "We felt coming into the game that we could hold our own up front."

After North Hills' Matt Zangaro returned a punt 43 yards to set the Indians up at Seneca's 17-yard line early in the opening period, McCurry turned to his ground game.

Three plays took the Indians to the 4-yard line before Corcoran scored his first touchdown of the night with 6:49 remaining in the quarter.

Corcoran added scoring runs of 67 and six yards by the end of the period to give the Indians a commanding 21-0 lead.

"He played well tonight," said McCurry of Corcoran. "We've been able to count on him all season."

"We are young and immature on both of our lines," said Butschle. "It wasn't that our guys were out of position, we just aren't at the level of North Hills at this point."

The Raiders' deepest venture into North Hills territory came in the second quarter.

Following a 28-yard scoring run by North Hills quarterback Ryan Lehmeier to make it 28-0, Evan Braithwaite returned the kickoff 38 yards to his own 48-yard line.

Mixing the run with the pass, which included Lee's 17-yard completion to Jim Paulin on third-and-6 near midfield, the Raiders drove to the Indians' 15-yard line.

Instead of going for a fourth-and-3, kicker Mark Renyck came on to attempt a 31-yard field goal, which he missed to the right.

Later in the quarter, North Hills' linebacker John Bearer picked off Lee's pass and returned it 61 yards for the final score of the half and the Indians led 35-0.

Corcoran added his fourth and final score of the night midway through the final period on a one-yard plunge.

Along with completing four of seven passes for 61 yards and an interception, Lehmeier rushed six times for 49 yards.

"We count on Ryan making plays and he responded again tonight," said McCurry.

The Indians (4-0, 2-0) have surrendered just 28 points all season.

Seneca Valley (0-4, 0-2) will host Quad North foe Mt. Lebanon Friday.
