Rockets' rushing duo run over Sharon
SHARON - Forget the rain. Forget the wind.
There was nothing that could have stopped Sean Ray and Trevor Gallo Friday.
The Slippery Rock High duo combined for 414 yards rushing as the Rockets amassed 446 yards on the ground on 64 carries and ran away with a 35-14 victory over Sharon at Tiger Stadium.
"I told the kids your name is in everything you do," said Rockets coach Clyde Conti. "(Friday) we had to look at our soul. I didn't know how we would respond.
"I was pleased with the team leadership and pleased with the intensity. … We just were able to knock some people off the line of scrimmage," he added.
"The one thing that impresses me about what they did is they ran the wing-T with all the smoke and mirrors that go on and they did it effectively," said Tigers coach Bob Fromm.
"That is impressive. They did it like it was 80 degrees and sunny," he added.
A heavy rain let up for most of the first half as the Rockets jumped out to a 21-0 lead.
A broken play on a punt attempt allowed the Rockets (2-1, 1-1) to begin its second drive of the night on the Sharon 20.
On a fourth down at the 6, quarterback Ben Collins found Matt Novak streaking across the middle of the end zone for the touchdown.
On Slippery Rock's next possession, a 51-yard run around the left side by Sean Ray gave the squad a first-and-goal at the 3. Two plays later, Collins ran it in for a 1-yard score to give the Rockets a 14-0 lead with 1:34 left in the first quarter.
The lead increased to 20-0 when Ray scored from 8 yards out with 10:15 before halftime.
The Tigers (0-3, 0-2), who had run only 10 plays for a total of 15 yards on their first three possessions, got a shot in the arm from running back A.J. Wilson and he almost shot the Tigers right back into the game.
On Sharon's ensuing drive, Wilson broke free on the first play from scrimmage for a 69-yard scoring run.
The Rockets countered with an 11-play, 69-yard drive, capped by a Trevor Gallo 38-yard scoring run and a conversion run by Collins.
Wilson came right back on the Tigers' first play again, this time for 78 yards. Nick Porreca's second extra point of the night made it 28-14 with 4:36 left before halftime.
The Rockets opened their next drive at their own 8-yard line before Gallo ran for eight yards. The Rockets then fumbled on consecutive snaps, and the Tigers' Tim Albert recovered the second one.
Sharon had the ball on the Slippery Rock 8, but sophomore quarterback Desmonde Jennings mishandled the snap two plays later and the Rockets recovered.
"That fumble was a big play," said Fromm. "We cringe because we don't know how we will react. It's easy to say, 'Wow, what could we have done if we got that in?'"
By halftime, the Rockets had 315 yards rushing while Wilson had 152 of the Tigers' 160 yards of offense.
"We did some things differently," said Conti. "We ran some I formations and I went back to my 1960s mentality and tried to spruce up a couple of things."
In the second half, the Tigers ran three plays before punting. Then, the Rockets embarked on an 11-play, 62-yard drive to account for the game's final score with 4:11 left in the frame.
Gallo's 10-yard score, followed by Bicehouse's third extra point of the night, sealed the win.
"I was proud of our guys," said Conti. "Win or loss, I know we'll get the max effort."
Notes:
Ray finished with 220 yards on 19 carries and Gallo 194 on 30 carries. … Jennings was filling in for Mike Snyderwine, who has torn cartilage in his knee and did not play. … The Rockets ran 42 offensive plays in the first half to the Tigers' 14.
