Falcons stun West Middlesex with OT win
Randy Lemmon probably never watched an extra point attempt with as much interest as he did Friday night.
The A-C Valley football coach saw his team fight West Middlesex to a 12-all tie by the end of regulation.
After the Big Reds took an 18-12 lead on the first possession of overtime, A-C Valley's Rocco Crapis rushed for a 10-yard score to tie the game.
That left matters up to holder Hank Heeter and kicker Luiz Goncalves, whose boot went through the uprights for a dramatic 19-18 road win.
It was the first successful conversion in the game. Both teams had combined for three missed extra points and two failed two-point conversion attempts up to that point.
"This is great for the kids," said Lemmon. "They were starting to get down after the first two losses this year. But it was a great performance tonight by everybody."
Moments before Goncalves' extra point, the Falcons' defense stopped the Big Reds on a two-point conversion attempt that would've put the home team up by eight points.
Crapis' overtime score came on a play the Falcons hadn't run all night.
"It was a dive play that just opened up for him," said Lemmon.
It was Crapis' second scoring run of the game.
The first one came from 30 yards out to tie the game at 6 in the third quarter. He ended the game with 101 yards on 17 carries.
Ben Bobbert blocked and recovered a punt for a touchdown in the fourth quarter for a 12-6 Falcons' lead.
The Big Reds' Jesse Polite tied the game with a 40-yard run later in the quarter before Steve Andrusky put West Middlesex ahead with a 10-yard run to open the overtime.
Colt Burk led A-C Valley's defense with 14 tackles.
Goncalves and Mark Hart both intercepted a pass in the game, as the Falcons held West Middlesex quarterbacks to 3-of-13 passing for just 27 yards.
The Big Reds (1-2) did rush for 234 yards, led by Andrusky's 75 yards on 13 carries.
Despite poor weather conditions throughout the region, Lemmon denies they having an effect on the game.
"The field held up pretty good," he said. "I don't think the weather affected the game at all."
The win, A-C Valley's third since 2000, came over a West Middlesex program that represented District 10 in the PIAA Class A playoffs the last two seasons.
The Falcons (1-2) will play a District 10 team for the second week in a row, hosting Conneaut Lake next Friday.
