Moniteau looking for some history

Moniteau has put together a versatile attack that has produced 78 points in two wins.

Union has not scored a point yet in two losses.

Two teams headed in opposite directions? Warriors coach Steve Wilson isn't buying it.

"I know (Union coach) Tom Kidder well and have a lot of respect for what he can do as a coach," Wilson said. "He got things going in the right direction at Moniteau and now he's trying to build a program over there.

"It's just a slow process and he's fighting a numbers problem. Plus, he was hired late and they're a little bit behind. We don't want them to catch up in our game."

Moniteau travels to Union for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday. A Warriors victory would give them their first 3-0 start since 1960, when Moniteau finished 7-2 under coach Frank Herbenick.

Fullback Matt Schandelmeier continues to be the featured back in Moniteau's offense, putting together 184 yards rushing and four touchdowns so far.

Quarterback Garth Kohlmeyer has completed 21-of-36 passes for 374 yards, five TDs and no interceptions. Eric Hilliard has eight catches for 178 yards, tight end Ryan Protzman five catches for 102. Both have scored two touchdowns.

"Garth has stepped right in at quarterback and Eric is still going up and getting the football," Wilson said. "That hasn't changed from last year.

"Ryan is doing a great job at middle linebacker for us, too. He had seven or eight tackles and a quarterback sack last week."

Wilson is making sure his team isn't taking Union for granted, though the Golden Knights began the season with just 20 players.

"They've got some good players," he said. "(Tight end-defensive end Nate) Carmichael has really been standing out for them.

"We need to establish something quickly, get on the board, not let them get into the game."

Union showed some progress in Week 2. After coughing up 40 points in the first quarter against Redbank Valley in the season opener, the Golden Knights were in a tight game against Keystone until the fourth quarter in a 26-0 loss.

The passing game finally clicked with junior quarterback Toby Best throwing for better than 100 yards last week.

Colton Davis has rushed for 109 yards on 29 carries.

"Well, we'd like to play the role of spoiler," Kidder said. "We don't have a lot of kids, but they are tough kids who love the game of football."

Union is getting healthy again, too. Sophomore cornerback Bret Switzer is back from injury and should shore up a leaky pass defense.

It will need it against Kohlmeyer and the Warriors.

It will also be the first time Kidder has faced his former team. Kidder was the Moniteau coach for three seasons before Wilson took over.

Both Kidder and Wilson are from East Brady.

"Steve's a Brady guy," Kidder said. "Us East Brady guys stick together."
