Hampton passes all over Knoch

JEFFERSON TWP - Knoch Stadium was filled to capacity Friday night as the Knights hosted Hampton in its homecoming football game.

The visiting Talbots spoiled the show when they used an effective passing game to defeat the Knights, 33-12.

Hampton reached the scoreboard first when sophomore quarterback Bob Bartley hooked up with sophomore Joe Cangilla on a 20-yard pass down the middle.

This was just a taste of things to come, as Bartley finished the night with a school-record four touchdown passes.

"What we've been doing up front offensively has been running the ball the past two weeks," Hampton coach Greg Mihalik said.

"You know with a sophomore quarterback we figured that they were going to try to shut down our run, but we've always had confidence in our passing game when we need to use it."

Knoch was quick to respond when Curtis Compton beat the secondary and took a Jordan Shoop pass 67-yards for a touchdown.

However, the second quarter belonged to Hampton. Bartley hooked up with junior Sean Hennessey on a quick 49-yard strike only 34 seconds into the quarter.

Bartley linked up with Cangilla once again for a 12-yard scoring pass at the end of the quarter. Hampton was successful on the two-point conversion when Bartley lobbed a pass to wide-open tight end Tim Dukovich.

"I thought that they would be able to pass, but, heck, some of those passes that they hooked up on were great," Knoch coach Mike King said.

Bartley linked up with Hennessey once again in the third quarter from 18 yards out, posting his fourth touchdown toss of the game.

"You play nine other teams, they don't hook up that consistently. You know you gotta be committed to stopping the run first," King said.

"I gotta give them some credit. That kid threw some nice balls."

Knoch refused to give up and started to put together some efficient drives in the fourth quarter. Shoop floated a 9-yard pass to 6-foot-8 senior Ryan Hollihan, who pulled it down between two defenders for a score.

Knoch tried to capitalize on its momentum by attempting an on-side kick on the ensuing kickoff.

Knoch's Paul Hancheck recovered the ball, but the officials ruled that the ball belonged to Hampton because it never hit the ground.

On Knoch's next drive, Hampton was penalized for defensive holding on fourth down. Instead of getting an automatic first down and a five penalty yards, Knoch had to replay fourth down after Hampton was assessed a 10-yard penalty.

David Bergamasco was stacked up at the line and stopped for no gain on the play, giving the ball back to Hampton.

Hampton delivered the knockout blow when sophomore Steve Paskorz broke two open field tackles on the way to a 42-yard touchdown run.

"Your kids are fighting and scratching for everything that they can get," King added.

"You know, I just thought that those things were questionable."
