Moniteau's passing game ready for A-C Valley

Clay who?

Moniteau junior quarterback Garth Kohlmeyer made everyone forget about his older brother - the Warriors' quarterback the past two years - by throwing for 250 yards and two touchdowns in last week's 52-20 win over Brookville.

A-C Valley may expect more of the same when the Falcons travel to Moniteau for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday.

The Falcons' defense surrendered 230 passing yards last week in a 42-8 loss at Clarion-Limestone.

"If I was preparing to play us this week, I'd throw against us," said A-C Valley coach Randy Lemmon.

"Garth made some great decisions with the football and he threw some nice passes," Moniteau coach Steve Wilson said. "Eric Hilliard has always been a deep-ball threat.

"He can go up and get the football and has the speed to run away from people."

Hilliard had five catches for 137 yards and a touchdown last week. Fullback Matt Schandelmeier added 16 carries for 120 yards and three TDs.

"He's a horse," Wilson said of Schandelmeier. "We'll try to establish him in our running game all of the time.

"We have five different guys playing on only one side of the ball. Our idea is to wear teams down in the fourth quarter. Matt's a big part of that."

The Warriors may be without right guard Dave Homison, who is questionable this week with a thigh bruise. Joe Criley will replace him if need be.

While A-C Valley has won just two games in the past three years, Wilson said the Falcons are much improved this year.

"They moved the ball consistently last week," he said. "Luiz Goncalves at quarterback and Colt Burk at running back are true threats. And Ben Bobbert is a very solid lineman for them."

A-C Valley rushed for 118 yards last week on 29 carries. The effort was led by Burk's 60 yards on 10 carries and Goncalves' 48 yards on nine carries.

"I thought we played with C-L for about a quarter and a half last week," said Lemmon. "We weren't disappointed in the kids because they're running styles on offense and defense they're not used to. They just need some time with it."

Lemmon will be looking for more production out of his passing game after Goncalves misfired on all nine of his attempts last week.

"Last week, we had some passing plays that should've worked, but our kids just couldn't hook up on them," said Lemmon. "We like to script several plays for the beginning of each game," said Lemmon. "We see how the defense reacts to those plays before deciding how we are going to call it the rest of the game."

Defensively, Moniteau's Chris Cooper recorded three quarterback sacks last week and Brandon Keene stood out along the line, the coach said.

Dating back to last season, the Falcons have lost five straight games, scoring just 49 points in that span.
