DETROIT - Magglio Ordonez will miss the rest of the season with a left knee injury, Chicago White Sox general manager Kenny Williams confirmed Tuesday.
Ordonez has been sidelined since July 22 with a knee injury, and the White Sox had been saying they did not expect him back this year.
CINCINNATI - St. Louis reliever Julian Tavarez was suspended for 10 days Tuesday for applying a foreign substance to balls while pitching last week.Tavarez appealed the penalty. No action will be taken until a hearing is held.
PITTSFORD, N.Y. - Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback J.P. Losman broke his left leg during practice Tuesday and will be out indefinitely.Losman's agent, Gary Wichard, told The Associated Press that Losman is expected to be out eight to 12 weeks. Wichard said he was informed by Bills doctors that Losman's injury is similar to one sustained last season by Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick.Vick was hurt Aug. 16 and didn't return until 3½ months later.
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Quarterback Quincy Carter signed a one-year deal with the New York Jets Tuesday three weeks after his surprising release by Dallas.Carter, who started every game for the Cowboys last season, was released Aug. 4, before the team's first exhibition game. Reports said he failed a drug test and the NFL Players Association has filed a request for arbitration in the case.
