Accident leaves 2 seriously hurt
BUTLER TWP - Five people were injured, two seriously, Sunday afternoon when a speeding car ran a stop sign and collided with a van at Highfield Road and East Boundary Street.
Nancy Fitzpatrick, 59, of Connoquenessing Township, who was driving the van, and her husband Walter Fitzpatrick, 62, a passenger, are hospitalized in Pittsburgh with major injuries suffered in the crash.
The couple's son, Justin Fitzpatrick, 25, of Connoquenessing Township, a passenger in the van, was also injured in the crash.
He, along with Joshua Wachter, 17, of Butler Township, who was driving the car, and Marcus Hough, 16, of Butler, a passenger in the car, were taken with minor injuries to Butler Memorial Hospital.
Township police said Nancy Fitzpatrick's GMC Safari van was traveling east on Highfield Road about 2:05 p.m. when Wachter's Pontiac Sunfire traveling south on East Boundary Street failed to stop at the intersection.
The car hit the van broadside, spinning the van 180 degrees. No one in the van was wearing a seat belt.
Walter Fitzpatrick was thrown out a side window and landed in a yard along the road in the residential neighborhood.
He was conscious and speaking with Butler Ambulance Service paramedics before being flown by medical helicopter to Presbyterian Hospital.
He is listed in fair condition this morning, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Police said he suffered a possible neck injury.
Nancy Fitzpatrick was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital before being flown to Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.
She is listed in serious condition and remains in the hospital's neuro-continuous care unit, a Mercy spokeswoman said. Police said she possibly suffered a broken back and head injuries in the crash.
Justin Fitzpatrick, Wachter and Hough were treated and later released.
It was not immediately known if Wachter or Hough was wearing a seat belt.
Wachter faces charges in the crash, which remains under investigation. Police said witnesses reported that Wachter was speeding and failed to stop at the intersection prior to the crash.
