AKRON, Ohio - Stewart Cink made five birdies on his first 10 holes and led by one shot over Rod Pampling before the rain-delayed first round of the NEC Invitational was suspended by darkness.
With a five-hour delay at the start and another hour lost late in the afternoon, only 16 players in the 76-man field finished their round. The rest will return at 7:30 a.m. Friday.
Pampling was 4 under through 12 holes.
Davis Love III, Jim Furyk and Thomas Levet of France were at 68, making them the clubhouse leaders.
Tiger Woods had the lead to himself until he finished with back-to-back bogeys, both times missing 8-foot putts, to fall two shots off the lead. It was hard to tell what made Woods more upset - ending his long day with bogeys, or having to return Friday morning to play one hole. He was 3 under through 17.
DUBLIN, Ohio - Kristi Albers had a hole-in-one on the 17th and shot a 5-under 67 for a share of the lead with defending champion Hee-Won Han in the rain-delayed opening round of the Wendy's Championship for Children.A violent storm rocked Tartan Fields Golf Club late in the day after half the 144-player field completed the first round. After a delay of 1 hour, 29 minutes, play resumed briefly before a second storm washed out the round.Han was 5 under through 13 holes when play was suspended the first time.Norway's Suzann Pettersen was a shot back of the co-leaders at 4 under through 17 holes.Three players finished at 3-under 69 - Nancy Scranton, almost 5 months pregnant with twins; Patricia Meunier-Lebouc and Dottie Pepper. Three others were 3 under before their rounds were halted - 2002 Wendy's winner Mi Hyun Kim, Ji Yeon Lee and Lorie Kane.Michelle Wie, the long-hitting 14-year-old amateur, was 3 over through 10 holes.
MAMARONECK, N.Y. - Danny Green, the oldest player in the field, moved into the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur with a 2-up victory over Spencer Levin, and NCAA champion Ryan Moore also advanced by rallying in the final five holes to beat Australian Aron Price 1-up at Winged Foot Golf Club.The 47-year-old Green, from Jackson, Tenn., defeated James Allenby of Canada 4 and 3 in a morning match, and then surprised the 20-year-old Levin, who finished tied for 13th at the U.S. Open in June.Moore takes on Jason Hartwick of Sacramento, Calif., in one of four quarterfinal matches.
EAGLE, Colo. - Defense attorneys argued that Kobe Bryant's statements to investigators after the NBA star was accused of rape last summer should be kept secret because it is not yet certain they will be used in his trial.In the court filing, the lawyers opposed a news media request to release Bryant's statements and testimony about those statements.In separate filings, prosecutors said they intend to introduce the statements at the trial but took no position on whether the statements should be released beforehand.
WASHINGTON - Andre Agassi breezed into the quarterfinals of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Kristian Pless.Agassi, who extended his winning streak to eight matches, broke serve in the third game of the match to take control.Gilles Muller of Luxembourg also advanced with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 win over Jan-Michael Gambill. Muller's quarterfinal opponent will be Michel Kratochvil, a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4) winner over eighth-seeded Dmitry Tursinov.
