Woman, 72, competes in Golden Age Games

Marilyn Hilliard , 72, an Army veteran from Butler just finished competing in the 18th National Veterans Golden Age Games in Fresno, Calif.

Hilliard competed in nine-ball billiards, horseshoes, bicycling and pentathlon.

"Last year, I attended the National Veterans Golden Age Games for the first time," Hilliard said in a press release. "Even though the events are different, I felt physically fit enough to compete."

She said training and competing has kept her youthful and healthier.

Other events at the games include swimming, table tennis, dominoes, shuffleboard, bowling, checkers, golf and croquet.

Hilliard also has participated in the Pennsylvania State Games and the National Senior Games since she was 65 years old.

The

Veterans Golden Age Games which started a week ago Sunday and ran through Friday, are sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary and Veterans Canteen Service.

Winners qualify to compete in the National Senior Games, held by the U.S. Olympic Committee.

The Butler Health System Foundation

recently raised $73,000 during the annual golf outing, held June 21.

The proceeds will support the Diabetes and Nutrition Management Center at Butler Memorial Hospital.

The event, sponsored by local businesses, was held at the Butler Country Club and included 140 golfers.

The MOMS Club of Gibsonia and Mars

was recently nominated as an outstanding chapter to the International MOMS Club.

The 30-member chapter, founded two years ago, provides support for at-home mothers.

In addition to supporting members through injuries, births, and loss of income, the chapter has participated in several community service projects.

Chapter members have collected eyeglasses for New Eyes for the Needy, cell phones for Hope Line and box tops for the Clarence Brown Education Center.

Members have also provided household goods for a family in need and hosted fund-raisers for the Mother-to-Mother disaster relief fund, the Victim Outreach and Intervention Center and the North Hills Community Outreach Center.

The club has also scheduled playgroups for children, speakers for monthly meetings, field trips to local businesses and a moms' night out.
