Lynch hopes to corral Outlaws again

Ed Lynch Jr. will see if lightning can strike twice Tuesday night at Lernerville Speedway.

The popular Apollo driver of the No. 2L Sprint car won the Don Martin Memorial World of Outlaws Silver Cup feature at the Sarver track two years ago. Last year's Silver Cup race was rained out.

Lynch has been dominant at Lernerville this season, winning six features already and jumping 14 spots - from 20th to sixth - in the Commonwealth Clash Outlaws race held at Lernerville in May.

"The Outlaws really don't give the local drivers any respect," said Lynch. "To get their respect, you have to go out on the road and compete.

"But a lot of the drivers here like to stay in their own part of the racing world, so the Outlaws like to come in and show them how it's done," he added.

Lynch is Lernerville's career Sprint feature win record-holder with 70.

The Silver Cup XII race pays $30,000 to the winner. Pit gates open at 3 p.m. Tuesday with time trials slated for 7:15. The grandstands open at 4. The feature is 35 laps.

"This is definitely the highlight of the summer, racing against the top caliber drivers of the division," said Lynch. "The key is speed. You've got to be fast and lucky."

Joey Saldana owns the single-lap record at Lernerville with a time of 12.334 seconds, set May 15, 2002.

Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell share the Outlaws record for most feature wins at Lernerville with 14. Kinser won his 14th May 25.

"I think the track was in better shape than I've seen it here in a long time," Kinser said after his 2004 victory. "It got wide enough where you could run a top or a bottom groove. When it's done like this, it's a lot of fun to race."

Kinser has won the Outlaws points championship 18 times and seems on his way to No. 19. He has won 12 features this season - Danny Lasoski, Jason Meyers and Craig Dollansky are second on the circuit with five each - and took a 66-point lead over Lasoski into last weekend's action.

Donny Schatz, who had the fastest qualifying time at Lernerville for the May 25 race, is third in points, 202 behind.

The 2004 Outlaws Series features 71 events over 99 dates at 50 tracks in 27 states and more than $10 million in purses, contingencies and point fund awards.

Here are some other notes surrounding Tuesday's Silver Cup race:

Jac Haudenschild, Mark Kinser and Steve Kinser are the only three drivers to have competed in all 11 previous Silver Cup races.

Tim Shaffer, Stevie Smith and Andy Hillenberg have qualified for 10 Silver Cups.

Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell have nine top-10 finishes in Silver Cup competition. Swindell is the only driver with seven top-five finishes.

Craig Rankin was the only local driver to qualify for the feature at the first Silver Cup.

Ed Lynch Jr. has started eight Silver Cup features. Among local drivers, Jamie Smith is second on that list with five.

Five sets of brothers have competed in the Silver Cup: Bobby and Joey Allen, Dean and Kenny Jacobs, Dale and Dave Blaney, Jeff and Sammy Swindell, James and P.J. Chesson.

The largest field of cars to compete in a Silver Cup event was 58 in 1992.
