Mars board votes to replace track

ADAMS TWP - The well-used running track encircling the football field at Planet Stadium behind Mars Middle School is dangerous to use and much of it must be replaced.

That is what Mars Area School District superintendent William Pettigrew told the school board Tuesday night. He said an 85-foot by 15-foot section of the track is coming up because of water that is getting underneath the surface.

"It needs to be replaced now before someone gets hurt," said Pettigrew.

The board agreed and voted to approve the repair, which will cost $20,000. It also voted have the track respired for $5,000.

Pettigrew said an unofficial study he and others did shows an average of 110 to 120 people use the track per day in nice weather. The track was built in 1997, and its five-year warrantee has expired.

Pettigrew recommended the project not be subjected to the lengthy bidding process because the lifted track presents a danger to athletes and residents who use it.

He said American Track and Turf in New Jersey has agreed to do the project, and the district's architects have approved the company's price and services.

Company representatives also will show district maintenance personnel how to repair stress cracks on the track.
