Geisler records 100th win at Lernerville

BUFFALO TWP - Once Lynn Geisler got the lead, he knew what to do: ride it to a milestone.

The veteran Cranberry Township Late Model driver grabbed the lead from Jeff Henry on the second turn of the seventh lap Friday night at Lernerville Speedway. He was never challenged the rest of the way in winning his 100th career Late Model feature at the Sarver track.

Geisler, 54, became only the second driver in Lernerville history to record 100 wins in the same division. Bob Wearing Sr. won 117 Late Model features here - 179 features overall - before retiring in 2001.

"The 117 wins I may be around long enough for," Geisler said. "The overall win total, no way."

Geisler has won at least one feature race at Lernerville every year since 1982. His best season was 1993, when he won 10 features.

Geisler owns about 250 feature wins in his racing career.

His son, Travis, who qualified 32nd in the Busch series race this weekend in Chicago, sent him a congratulatory message.

Lernerville officials had a cake prepared commemorating Geisler's 100th win after he claimed No. 99 June 4. The cake was kept frozen since.

"The people who do the counting make it 100," Geisler said. "I just go out every time and try to win. Stuff like this is great for the fans. All of this is for the fans.

"The same crew, the same sponsors, most of them have been with me from wins one through 100. That's what makes it special for me."

Geisler's brother, Gary, has been his crew chief throughout his career. Jim Ross and Carl McKinney are other longtime members of his crew.

Andy Kennedy, Late Model driver Chuck Kennedy's son, is among Geisler's other crewmembers.

Chuck Kennedy recorded overall career win No. 99 here last week when he won his first-ever Late Model feature.

"I'm in my 26th year of racing and just won my 99th race anywhere," Kennedy said. "Lynn has won 100 races just here. That's just amazing to me."

Geisler has won four Late Model points championships at Lernerville, including three in a row from 1992-94.

Various accidents jumbled up the points standings in the other three divisions Friday night:

The Modified Magic Twin Modified features were won by Kevin Bolland and Mark Flick, but the biggest winner was Slippery Rock's Dave Murdick.

Murdick finished third and second, respectively, in the two features and took an 18-point lead over previous points leader Jim Weller Jr.

Weller and Brian Swartzlander were knocked out of the first feature when Swartzlander and race leader Bolland got tangled up on the fourth turn of the 12th lap.

Bolland escaped the contact and went on to win the race.

"It was just a racing accident," Bolland said. "I went in wide on the high side and Brian tried taking the low groove. We both experienced problems and came together."

Swartzlander agreed it was an innocent accident.

"I came down, I got sideways and had no place to go," Swartzlander said. "What are you gonna do?"

The win was Bolland's second of the season and 25th of his career at Lernerville.

Flick, the 1994 Lernerville points champion, switched to asphalt racing shortly thereafter. He returned to dirt track racing last year.

Flick grabbed the lead on the 11th lap of the second feature and beat out Murdick for the win, his first at Lernerville since April 29, 1994.

Ed Lynch Jr. started up front in the Sprint feature and never surrendered the lead in winning his seventh feature of the year here - 10th overall - and extending his Sprint win record at the Sarver track to 71.

Lynch regained the points lead as well when previous leader Chad Hill got tangled up with Jason Dukes, whose car flipped in the mishap on Turn 4 of the 15th lap. Dukes was unhurt.

Butch Lambert of Mars won his eighth career Lernerville Pure Stock feature - but his first since July 19, 2002 - when he grabbed the lead from Mike Pegher Jr. on the eighth lap.

Pegher spun out and Rob Shook - running second at the time and also running second in points - was black-flagged for rough driving.

Shook fell to third in the points race and Chicora's Greg Beach pulled into second, 11 behind Joe Kelley.

Pegher spun right in front of Lambert coming around Turn 4.

"That almost happened a couple of other times and I was watching for it. … But I don't know how I missed him," Lambert said.

Notes:

Sprint driver Mike Dehner of Worthville was flown by helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital after an accident in the B-Main. Dehner's No. 17 car hit the wheel of another car and was sent airborne into the fence off Turn 3. He was conscious but complained of neck and shoulder pain, and has a history of concussions. He was taken to the hospital as a precaution. … Gary Risch Jr. of Freeport won his first heat race of the year. ... Bob Puz of Rural Ridge was involved in a violent crash during his heat race. Puz's No. 33 went into the fence sideways on the front straightaway and flipped. Pieces of the car were sheered off and the fence was damaged, but Puz was unhurt. … Mike Turner of Butler qualified for the Pure Stock feature through the B-Main, started 19th and finished fifth. … There were 111 cars in the pits.
