Peters Twp falls in final

HARRISBURG, Pa. - Chambersburg right-hander Irvin Sleighter struck out eight and hit a two-run home run to lead the Trojans to a 12-5 win over the Peters Township Indians for the PIAA Class AAA baseball championship on Friday.

The state title is the third for Chambersburg (25-4), which last won five years ago. It was the Indians' first appearance in the championship game.

Sleighter unloaded in the first inning to give the Trojans an early lead, and Peters Township (18-8) made it 2-1 on an RBI single by Anthony Rossi in the top of the fourth.

But the Trojans exploded for nine more runs in the bottom of the inning to take an 11-1 lead, starting with Andy Burke's home run. Chambersburg sent 14 batters up to the plate, collected eight hits and got help from two errors by the Indians. Andy Carter had an RBI in each of his two at-bats in the inning, with Tyler Brown, Sleighter and Josh Frey each chipping in with one.

Facing the 10-run rule, the Indians battled back in the top of the fifth to score four runs, three on a bases-clearing double by Jim Gallagher.

Chambersburg closed out the scoring when Brown doubled to drive in the final run in the fifth.

Sleighter finished his high school career with two hits, three RBIs and a 12-0 record on the mound. Tyler Brown and Josh Frey had three hits for Chambersburg.
