The Butler County Pomona Grange held its Rural Life service recently at St. John's Lutheran Church in Prospect.

During the service, awards were presented to

Margaret Dyer for community service and

Helen Fleeger for non-granger community service.

Membership awards were presented to the following grange members during a ceremony at the Unionville Grange.

Worth Grange: LeRoy Miller, 80 years

Unionville Grange: Thelma Fleeger, 80 years, and John Wise, 50 years

Jefferson Grange: Mabel Bartmas, Kathryn Jones and Nancy Halstead , all 55 years; Howard Halstead , 60 years; and Gladys Blain, Esther Stepanovich and Tom Abels, all 65 years

Donegal Grange: Marvin Davis, 25 years

The granger of the year award was presented to Paul Dyer of the Jefferson Grange.

Currently the treasurer for the organization, Dyer has been a member of the grange since the late 1940s.

He assists with the making of apple butter, fair and farm show dinners, grange displays, card parties and other grange activities.

Dyer is also a member of the Pennsylvania State Grange, the National Grange, the Moraine Blazing Star Camping Club, the Martian Camping Club and Glade Run United Presbyterian Church.

He is a former chicken farmer and plasterer, and a former employee of Pullman Standard and the Kellog Company in Oakland.

He and his wife Margaret Dyer live in Prospect. They have two children, five grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Dawn Mawhinney, daughter of Carol Bintrim of Harmony and the late Donald Bintrim, was recently awarded the educator of the year award at Rancho Cotate High School in Rohnert Park, Calif.Mawhinney, who lives in Rohnert Park with her husband Kevin Mawhinney and son, has taught at the school for six years.

Diane Ganss of Harmony recently received the Pennsylvania Spirit of Hospice Award for her work in nursing.Ganss, who works at the Butler Visiting Nurses Association Hospice, is married to Floyd Ganss of Harmony. She has three children, five grandchildren and a step-granddaughter.

The Slippery Rock Rotary honored three people this year with its 12th annual Community Service Awards.Rotary members had a dinner for the honorees June 3 at Citizens Bank in Slippery Rock.The honorees are:Augusta Mennellfor her work with international students at Slippery Rock University.Bonnie Renickfor her work at the Feed My Sheep Food Cupboard in Slippery Rock and for international work with Rotary International.Constance Smithfor helping to start the Institute for Learning in Retirement at Slippery Rock University.The Rotary named each winner a Paul Harris Fellow and made a $1,000 donation in each of their names to Rotary International.

GROVE CITY - Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV teachers Stephanie Cioffi andKatherine Singerwere honored May 26 as recipients of the 2004 Annie Sullivan Award.Cioffi, a teacher for 22 years in the field of deaf education and speech pathology, was called an "individual in education who truly does exemplify an excellence in teaching."Cioffi works with hearing-impaired students at Shenango High School in New Castle. She lives in Volant.Singer, a speech/language therapist for the intermediate unit for eight years, was described as "very active with each district student and has a good rapport with the other members of the staff."Singer serves learning support, emotional support and regular education students in several school districts. She lives in New Castle.Named for Helen Keller's teacher, the Annie Sullivan Award is presented annually to a person or persons in education who show care, concern and skill in helping students with disabilities gain acceptance in their schools and communities.The intermediate unit serves 27 school districts in Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties.
