The WPIAL has decided to make a little history this Saturday and five Butler County baseball players and one of its coaches will be along for the ride.
The WPIAL will hold its first-ever all-star game in any sport at Falconi Field in Washington, Pa., home of the Washington Wild Things baseball club.
The Class A game will begin at 11 a.m. followed by Class AA at 2:30 p.m. and Class AAA at 6.
The teams were selected by coaches from a pool of players they nominated.
Mars High baseball coach Andy Bednar will lead the Class AA Black squad.
Mars first baseman Mike Skurko will be a member of that same squad while Freeport shortstop Luke Westerman will be a member of the Red squad.
"Coach Bednar's been my coach for the past few years," said Skurko. "He knows what I can do and what I'm capable of."
Seneca Valley pitcher Ryan Page and third baseman Ben Follett and Knoch catcher Todd Kennedy will play in the Class AAA game.
"I think it's a good thing," said Westerman. "It's something for the kids.
"It's a big event. There's going to be scouts there and gives kids a chance to show what they can do," Westerman added.
"It's the first time they've done this so it's should be nice," said Skurko. "Falconi Field is a spectacular field. It should be nice to play down there."
Each team will have two players at each position plus three pitchers on its staff for the nine-inning games.
"Everybody will be getting about four or five innings apiece," said Skurko.
With scouts in attendance, this game will give recent high school graduates an opportunity to play and to catch the attention the scouts.
"It's really a big honor," said Follett. "I really didn't expect it, to be asked to play with some of the best players in the WPIAL."
The idea of being part of something historic is appealing to the players, but the game itself matters more.
"It would be an honor even if it wasn't the first-ever game," said Follett. "It's nice to have an all-star game with players who performed throughout the year.
"There are guys going Division I, guys going pro, guys drafted, guys going all over the place," Follett added.
