Kenseth wins all-star race

Matt Kenseth claimed the $1 million winners purse Saturday night at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., with an impressive pass on Ryan Newman with four laps remaining in the Nextel All-Star Challenge.

Following Newman across the finish line were the Chevrolets of Tony Stewart, Michael Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

The All-Star Challenge wasn't without incident, despite a field of only 24 cars. Late in the race, 11 cars tangled after Greg Biffle went into the wall, sending six drivers to the garage for the rest of the night.

Lowe's Motor Speedway will host the Coca-Cola 600 Sunday. Last year's race was won by Jimmie Johnson.

Rain once again caused the cancellation of last Fridays race program. The track will feature its regular Fab 4 card and a demo derby this Friday.A number of young drivers are making their presence known at The Action Track. Late Model driver Spanky Daugherty from the Sarver area is showing signs of being the top gun in that division. Daugherty captured the Late Model feature at Latrobe Speedway over the weekend, with another Sarver driver, Ken Schaltenbrand, placing second.Sprint driver Chad Hill has improved immensely from last season. Hill won a feature two weeks ago at Lernerville.

Dave Wade of Clinton started the Late Model feature on the pole and led wire to wire to win his second victory of the season.Wayne Tessean and Chuck Kennedy put on a battle in the E-Mod feature with Tessean winning out. It was Tressean's 50th career win at the track.A demo derby will be part of the regular program Saturday night.

Rod George got his first Sprint feature win of the season at Tri-City Sunday night. George has notched 26 career wins at Tri-City, three behind Lou Blaney, who holds the modern day record.Joe Crawford of Polk cruised to his first win of the season in the 20-lap DIRT Modified feature. Rex King, Chanda Reitz, Kevin Bolland and Chris Schiffer completed the top five.The track will honor the late Dick Rankin Sunday with the running of the first Dick Rankin Memorial Modified race.

Cameron Dodson, the 16-year-old sprint driver from Greenfield, Ind., won the Sprint feature Saturday night, beating Jamie Smith across the finish line.Dodson became the second teenager to win a Sprint feature at Mercer; Brian Woodhall picked up the other win in 2001.Tommy Kristyak continues to dominate the Big-Block Modifieds. He nailed his second win of the season and his 48th career victory Saturday.Mercer is running a unique promotion this year involving residents from counties surrounding the Mercer oval. This Saturday, Clarion County residents will be admitted free.

Rick Strong, a former Semi-Late Model driver at Lernerville, won his second Late Model feature of the season at Marion Center over the weekend besting Dave Satterlee, Alex Ferree and Ken Schaltenbrand.Jarod Larson edged Ed Lynch Jr. in the Sprint feature at Sharon Saturday night.Brad Doty, former World of Outlaws driver, is a co-host on the tape-delayed broadcasts of a select number of Outlaws shows, which are televised on the Outdoors Channel Wednesday evenings.Jim Lokhaiser is the racing columnist for the Butler Eagle.
